History of Antigua and Barbuda • Antigua is also known as Wadadli, which means "our own". • Local tribes were the first to inhabit the island of Barbuda in 2400 B.C. • Later Arawak and Carib tribes populated the islands. • Early settlement by the Spanish was replaced by English rule from 1632, with a French interlude in 1666. • The islands became an independent state within the Common wealth of Nations on November 1, 1981.

  5. Barbuda is known for its collection of caves in the northern section of the island. • The caves contain petroglyphs, decorative incisions into rocks made by ancient humans.

  7. More Crazy stuff! • The Antigua Racer Snake is the rarest snake in the world, with only about two hundred living. It is found on Bird Island, an island off the coast of Antigua. • Barbuda is home to the Frigate Bird. • Highest point is Boggy Peak, at 402m.

Culture Facts • Official language is English. • GDP per capita is $12,586 US. • Population of 82,786.  • Density of 394 people per square mile. • An independent scientific study ranked Antigua and Barbuda as the 16th happiest country in the world • Family and religion play an important role in Antiguans. • There is a national Carnival celebration during the month of August each year: historically Carnival commemorates the abolition of slavery in the British West Indies. The Carnival includes pageants, shows, contests and festive activities, and is a notable tourist attraction.

Living Conditions • Climate: tropical marine; little seasonal temperature variation. • Terrain: mostly low-lying limestone and coral islands, with some higher volcanic areas. • In January and February, the coolest months, the average daily high temperature is 81°F (27°C). • In July and August, the warmest months, the average daily high is 86°F (30°C).
