  1. Mr. Dabbs 1/18/2011 Period # Antigua and Barbuda C – Most people are descendants of Africans and live in one-story houses made of concrete blocks or wood. Popular foods are beans, fish, lobsters, and sweet potatoes. The official language spoken is English. H – Columbus named the island in 1493 after a church he knew of back in Seville, Spain, but it later became an English slave colony. E – Their major source of economic activity is tourism, and this employs 35% of the people, and makes up 70% of the GDP. G – Because there is so little rainfall (about 40 inches a year), this country needs to build rainwater catchments and desalinize the ocean water for people to drink. G – They are a constitutional monarchy (limited government) and have a government similar to the British system, with a Prime Minster, Parliament, and an Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, which is used by other neighboring nations, too. F – The v shape stands for victory over colonial power, the blue and white represent the sands and oceans, the yellow sun represents the beginning of a new era for this nations, and the black symbolizes the many people of African heritage who live here. They became independent from Britain in 1981 and their flag was adopted in 1967.
