History of China Did You Know Facts The recorded history ofChina began in the 15th century BC when the Shang Dynasty started to use markings that evolved into the present Chinese characters. Turtle shells with markings reminiscent of ancient Chinese writing from the Shang Dynasty have been carbon dated to as early as 1500 BC. Chinese civilization originated with city-states in the Yellow river (Huang He) valley. 221 BC is commonly accepted to be the year in which China became unified under a large kingdom or empire. In that year, Qin Shi Huang first united China. Did you know that ice cream was invented in China in 2000BC by packing a milk and rice mixture in the snow. Did you know China has 3240 broadcasting stations and 259 FM channels. Did you know People in China have been drinking tea for over than 1800 years. Chinese White tea is basically boiled water. Did you know Chi Le Mei (Have You Eaten) Is the most traditional Chinese greeting.
The History Oylmpics In Olympia, Greece, the Olympic Games were held every four years. The first Olympic games were recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time the great festival took place to honour the Greek gods. The Olympics were held during the great festival. The Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece. The rings each represents the continents Asia, Europe, America, Australia, Africa.
Olpmpics~! What is the Olympics you ask? well it is every 4 years when athletes from all around the world to compete against each other in a stadium this is the only time when people join together competing for fun. The Olympic Torch is a symbol of the Olympic Games. Commemorating the theft of fire from the Greek god Zeus by Prometheus, its origins lie in ancient Greece, when a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics. The fire was reintroduced at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, and it has been part of the modern Olympic Games ever since.
Opening Ceremony The 2008 Summer Olympics opening ceremony was held at the Beijing National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest. It began at 8:08 pm China Standard Time on 8 August 2008 because in Chinese culture, 8 is considered to be a lucky number. The number 8 is associated with prosperity and confidence in Chinese culture. Organisers claim that the stadium was full to its 91,000 capacity. It was noted for its focus on ancient Chinese culture, and for its creativity, as well as being the first to use weather modification technology to prevent rainfall. The final ascent to the torch featured Olympic gymnast Li Ning, who appeared to run through air around the top ring of the stadium. Featuring more than 15,000 performers, the ceremony lasted over four hours and was reported to have cost over US$100 million to produce.
Closing Ceremony The 2008 Summer Olympics closing ceremony was held at the Beijing National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest. It began at 8:00 pm China Standard Time on August 24, 2008. The number 8 is associated with good-luck and confidence in Chinese culture. The Ceremony also included the handover of the games from Beijing to United States The Olympic Games were awarded to Beijing after an exhaustive ballot of the International Olympic Committee on July 13, 2001. The official logo of the Games, titled "Dancing Beijing," referring to the host city. Several new NOCs have also been recognised by the IOC. The 2008 Olympics was the third time the Olympics had taken place on the Asian continent.
Beijings Tourist Attractions The Temple of Heaven is the largest group of structures in the country dedicated to rituals that pay homage to the glory of heaven. This temple was built specifically for worship of heaven and prayers for good harvests during the Ming and Qing dynasties. There are two amazing acoustical spots in the temple. Originally built in the 1500's, The Forbidden City it was the official home of the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Today, it is a major Beijing tourist attraction where visitors can walk the great halls and pavilions, marvel at the ornate courtyards and view one of the largest collections of Chinese art & jewels anywhere.
Archery Individual men Individual women Team men Team women Each qualified team will consist of no more and no less than three archers. All four events will be competed under the FITA-approved 70m distance and rules. There will be a ranking round before moving on to the Olympic round, which will be played in a tournament format. In individual competition, there is a field of 64 individuals; in team competition, there is a field 16 teams. The ranking round will seed individual and team rounds; from there, the medal round will be conducted in tournament format where one loss will eliminate the competitor, save for the semifinals. In that round, the losers will move on to bronze medal competition; the winners will move on to compete for the gold medal.
Badminton Each event will be played in tournament-style format; one loss will eliminate the individual or the team from Olympic competition. The singles' draws will be no larger than 64 competitors and the doubles' draws will see no more than 16 pairs entered. The May 1, 2008, Badminton World Federation ranking will be used to name 38 singles players for each men and women and to name all 48 doubles teams for men's, women's and mixed competitions.
Basketball Basketball at the Olympics consists of two tournaments: one for the men, and one for the women. Each tournament is made up of 12 teams, which qualified for the Games by placing high enough in a previous tournament that served as an Olympic qualifier. The Beijing Olympic basketball tournament begins on Aug. 9, Day 1 of the Games, and concludes on Aug. 24, Day 16 and the final day of the Games.
