    1. Lets begin at the beginning . . . Pages 54 61 are essentially a lecture given by Beatty about the history of books, learning, and censorship in this world.

    3. Page 55 Is any real learning going on in this society? How is Hamlet shown to the masses? How do people view thought and thinking? What is Mildred doing that seems to make Montag uncomfortable?

    4. Page 55 56 Beatty speaks about schooling: School is shortened, discipline relaxed, philosophies, histories, languages dropped, English and spelling gradually gradually neglected, finally almost completely ignored. Life is immediate, the job counts, pleasure lies all about after work. Why learn anything save pressing buttons, pulling switches, fitting nuts and bolts? Respond to the above quote in light of our society today. Is this true of us? In what ways? How did this happen? Is it getting worse or better? Explain.

    5. Page 56 What does Mildred find?? What is her reaction?? Do you think Beatty is on to them?

    6. Page 57 More sports for everyone, group spirit, fun, and you dont have to think, eh? Organize and organize and superorganize super-super sports. More cartoons in books. More pictures. The mind drinks less and less. Question: What is your response to this quote in light of your world? Do you see any similarities, or are there differences?

    7. Page 57 - 58 On these pages, Beatty talks about censorship. How did censorship come about? What is the society trying to do away with by getting rid of books? Do you think censorship can come from technology, mass exploitation, and minority pressure? Is the word intellectual a swear word? Do people really dread the unfamiliar? Can a book be dangerous, as Beatty contends?

    8. Page 59 For what are Montag and Beatty responsible? People want to be happy, isnt that right? Havent you heard it all your life? I want to be happy, people say. Well, arent they? Dont we keep them moving, dont we give them fun? Thats all we live for, isnt it? For pleasure, for titillation? And you must admit our culture provides plenty of these. Are happiness, fun, and pleasure the three most important things in life? Can these be attained WITH knowledge?

    9. Page 59, cont Censorship! Colored people dont like Little Black Sambo. Burn it. White people dont feel good about Uncle Toms Cabin. Burn it. Someones written a book on tobacco and cancer of the lungs? The cigarette people are weeping? Burn the book. Is this an effective way to liveto get rid of EVERYTHING that harms, hurts, or goes against someones beliefs? Explain.

    10. Page 60 What does Beatty believe about Clarisse McClellan? Do you agree with his assessment?

    11. Page 61 Beatty believes you can keep a man happy by: Let him forget there is such a thing as war. Cram them full of noncombustible data, chock them so damned full of facts they feel stuffed, but absolutely brilliant with information. Then theyll feel theyre thinking, theyll get a sense of motion without moving. And theyll be happy, because facts of that sort dont change. Dont give them any slippery stuff like philosophy or sociology What do you think of these statements??????

    12. Beatty says that every fireman gets an itch for something. What is that itch? Did Montag get the itch? What are the consequences?

    13. Montags Revelation Hes [Beatty] right. Happiness is important. Fun is everything. And yet I kept sitting there saying to myself, Im not happy, Im not happy. (pg 65) Are people today seeking happiness in life? Is fun everything to them? Explain.
