Confessions of a Teenage Hollywood StarBy RunaI was stunned when I found out that Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen actually had a sequel, but the shock continued once I kept reading. Hollywood Star had none of the same charm that Drama Queen had, and the plot was completely dull

  2. and repetitive. I honestly think the best part of the book was the chapter titles. The book was entirely too plot-driven, with no character development, and you know why? Because all of the character development was done in Drama Queen! Once you actually get your way through this book, the ending is rushed and hectic and the whole book just feels like a disappointment. Sheldon should have just stopped at Drama Queen, because I can call this nothing more than a pathetic flop.Rating: 1/5 Dyan Sheldon's comically melodramatic heroine casts her best friend, Ella, in a supporting role as they conspire to land a part in a real-live movie that's filming tantalizingly close to home. After enduring years of angst, Lola is graduating from high school and finally getting out of Dellwood "Deadwood," New Jersey. She can't wait to move on to bigger and better things even if it means she'll be studying theater at Brooklyn College and not her dream school, London's prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. But destiny intervenes when Lola learns that a major Hollywood movie is being filmed right there in Dellwood that very summer! Lola wastes no time in telling everyone (including her nemesis, Carla Santini) that she, of course, is going to be in the movie. Now it's just a minor matter of convincing the director to give her a part. Is the Drama Queen ready and wily enough to make the leap from the stage to the silver screen? From School Library JournalGrade 7 UpIt's the summer after graduation, and Lola Cep, first introduced in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen (Candlewick, 1999), is finally going to break out of Dellwood, NJ, aka her prison with shopping malls. However, she can't do this without one last confrontation with her nemesis, Carla Santini. Lola should be leaving petty rivalry behind, but when a Hollywood movie crew comes to town, her determination to one-up Carla blinds her to reason. Lola, a master white liar, cannot resist boasting that she has been cast for a small part, despite having no legitimate connections. Not to be outdone, Carla convinces her influential father to house the movie's stars, and, unable to resist Carla's taunts, Lola vows to right this grievous wrong. Her optimism is contagious and her antics will amuse readers while causing them to cringe with embarrassment. The drama that the teen manufactures is at last curbed when she encounters true injustice. Lola gains astuteness points by acknowledging that sometimes she is her own worst enemy. Sheldon skillfully blends elaborate schemes with comedic execution, and her messagethat ambition is a dish best served with a side of perspectiveis a positive one. The conclusion, while cookie- cutter neat, will please fans of the first book. Lola's expressive wit and wholesomeness make her an appealing heroine.Erin Schirota, Bronxville Public Library, NY Copyright Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. After Lola learns that a major movie will be filmed in her "soporific" New Jersey suburb, her ploys to win an onscreen part intensify when she discovers that her nemesis, Carla, has engineered her own way onto the set. Following on the heels of the real-life release of Drama Queen's film adaptation, this title is filled with a teen movie's camera-ready, over-the-top high jinks and unlikely, entertaining adventures. Descriptions of Lola's stint as a hotel maid carry somewhat heavy, patched-on messages about social class and empathy. Still, Lola's voice is once again an uproariously funny delight, and few YA characters speak with such articulate, sharp humor about feelings readers will recognize: "I've always known that my mother's soul is as pedestrian as a sidewalk. (She's a potter, for God's sake--her life is all about mud)." Expect lots of demand from summer readers. Gillian EngbergCopyright American Library Association.
