Who Can Be a Good Theatre Actor? Astronaut, cowboy, policeman, soldier, president, actor, and singer - all of these are very popular among children when adults ask them what they want to be when they grow up. Generally, everybody wants to be famous when they grow up, and children immediately think of actors and singers when they think about celebrities. So, there are a lot of wannabe actors among children, but few of these kids really live up to their childhood dreams of becoming actors and actresses. After all, if every kid could grow up and be what they wanted to be during childhood, we would have millions upon millions of actors, astronauts, and presidents. What Being a Good Theatre Actor Entails? Many people wrongfully think that life of a theatre actor is all glamour and glitter, and that actors lead a peaceful and a lifestyle worth of envy. However, much like with many other things, people tend to see only the outer layer of the life of theatre actors, and this often includes glamorous parties and receptions, stage performances, interviews, talk shows, and so on. However, most theatre actors do not lead a glamorous lifestyle at all. Most of them are working people; people who work hard to earn what they can; and people who have to constantly work on improving their skills if they want to last in their trade. Determination and the Feeling of Self-Worth as the Most Important Personality Traits A good theatre actor has to have extremely strong will and determination, as well as a sense of self-worth that could never be shaken by anything in the world. Without these personality traits, one
can never be a good and successful actor. This can easily be explained through an example. Namely, it is easy to imagine an actor who tries to get a part, any part in any theatre play, and the actors fails to do this week by week. Every audition the actors goes to ends up by someone else being chosen for the part, so the actor spends weeks and weeks without work. Now, most actors in this position have to find employment of another kind, so they end up giving up on their dream to be theatre actors. So, it is easy to see that determination and self-worth are extremely important factors. The Financial Aspect Yes, actors generally make a lot of money, but theatre actors usually make just enough, or sometimes even less than that. Namely, theatre is not as popular as it used to be, and apart from maybe a dozen cities in the world, every other city or town is hard to make it in as a theatre actor. As opposed to movie actors who can make one movie and live off it for the rest of their lives if this movie or show is a big hit, theatre actors have to work till they have enough to retire on, and this usually takes them into their late sixties or early seventies. All in all, being a theatre actor is not for everyone, as it is a job that needs to be taken seriously and done with love, as well as a high level of professionalism.
