1. Closed Rhinoplasty or Open Rhinoplasty - Which Technique Suits Your Needs Rhinoplasty - the surgery of the nose - is a complex operation which requires the services of a highly skilled plastic surgeon. There are two methods for the nose job procedure - open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. Both techniques have their pros and cons. Closed rhinoplasty is performed by making the incisions inside the nose, which has the advantage that it does not leave any visible scarring. This technique, however, is best limited to very straightforward rhinoplasty procedures as it is impossible to properly expose the inner nose with this technique, making it difficult to carry out meticulous work for anyone but the most highly skilled surgeons. The best candidate for closed rhinoplasty is someone who requires minor work - the removal of a dorsal hump, for instance - but whose nose tip and overall structure of

2. the nose is good. For a rhinoplasty patient who meets these requirements there are several advantages of opting for the closed technique. Healing time is generally much quicker and they are likely to experience much less swelling as there is less trauma involved to the nose in the operation. In open rhinoplasty a careful incision is made across the columella (the fleshy column which separates the nostrils). The nasal skin is then gently lifted back to expose the cartilage and tissue underneath. The procedure leaves a slight scar, although in most patients this will fade until it is barely visible. Extra work may be required on the supporting cartilage structure of the nose, due to the trauma caused to the nose in open rhinoplasty, and generally more swelling occurs than in the closed technique. Open rhinoplasty is sometimes favoured by plastic surgeons because it enables them to see the cartilage in its natural position, making it much easier to see exactly what work needs to be done and carry out the procedure more accurately. This is especially important in more complex operations, for instance open rhinoplasty is used almost exclusively in ethnic rhinoplasty where procedures are often more problematical. It is more straightforward to find a surgeon who will be able to carry out open rhinoplasty well. As open rhinoplasty offers the best training opportunities to medical students, newly qualified surgeons are more likely to be proficient in the open technique than they are in the closed. There are plastic surgeons that have had many years of experience and are skilful enough to carry out more complex procedures using the closed method, but they may be harder to come by. To increase your likelihood of getting a successful nose job, it is necessary to spend a great deal of time locating a suitable surgeon. Both techniques have their merits, but you can find out the best method for you by booking a consultation. Learn more about what options you have, come to Brian Evans Plastic Surgery Clinic.
