  1. AAT-EyeCheckScreening for Fatigue Kim O’Neil Advanced Aviation Technology Ltd. Tel. +44 1483 811 311 Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  2. Presentation • What is EyeCheck? • How does it work? • Application areas • Fatigue testing • Benefits Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  3. What is EyeCheck? • EyeCheck™ Pupillometer • Analyses Eye Pupil Response • Employs simple medical principles • Straightforward measurement techniques • Rapid, two minute procedure….. • Application to: • Measurement of fatigue • Detection of drugs Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  4. What is EyeCheck? Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  5. What is EyeCheck? An easy to use binocular-like device: • Non-invasive • Non-Gender specific • Instant results and analysis • Eliminates privacy issues • No baseline necessary • Medically peer reviewed • Easy-to-use, minimal training required Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  6. How Does it Work? • The eye is allowed to adapt to dark (30 secs) • EyeCheck measures initial pupil diameter • A brief flash of light: • measures reflex amplitude, rate of constriction • final minimum pupil diameter, time to min. dia. • EyeCheck measures real-time eye dynamics • infrared optics, collects IR light scattered by eye • 10-2 mm accuracy, 10 samples per second Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  7. Normal Pupil Response Three normal responses (red, blue and green) Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  8. Fatigue at 12 Hours Red is unfatigued, blue and green are at 12 hours Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  9. Fatigue at 18 hours Red is unfatigued, blue and green are at 18 hours Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  10. Fatigue at 22 hours Red is unfatigued, blue and green are at 22 hours Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  11. Application Areas • Measuring fatigue • Fatigue and human performance • Impact of duty times, shift patterns • Safety monitoring of personnel • Sleep hygiene, stress • Detection of drugs (pre-screening) Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  12. Application Areas • Roads, Trains, Boats, Planes • Pilots, cabin crew, maintenance, ATC, drivers • On duty, in transit, on standby • Airlines, airports, rail, maritime, road transport • Police, private security • Public safety, clubs • Research Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  13. Why Test for Fatigue? Fatigue rarely monitored, despite impact on: • Known Occupational Hazards • Accident rates, poor decision-making • Disfunctional behaviour, stress, irritation • Major risk in many professions: • Pilots, ATC, Doctors, Police, Security etc. etc. • Especially as “Sleep Hygiene” is often poor Note: 17-19 hrs without sleep equivalent to 0.05 BAC Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  14. Causes of Fatigue • Causes of fatigue can be complex • Onset of fatigue may be due to several factors • Fatigue can be caused by: • Lack of sleep • Poor personal sleep hygiene • Disrupted sleep patterns • Stress, Overwork, Illness….. Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  15. Summary • Easy to use… • Simply look into the unit: • A light flashes, the pupil reacts to stimuli, causing constriction followed by re-dilation. • EyeCheck measures, records and evaluates this response….. (include subject data, age) Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  16. Summary • Minimal Training required • Rapid, Accurate, Reliable, Adaptable • Benchmarks Fatigue, Duty Time Schemes • Whole workforce testing possible • Performance improvement • Fitness-for-duty testing Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  17. Summary • Non-invasive • Lightweight, portable, user friendly • Can sample large numbers quickly • Interfaces to PC, Laptop, PDA • Records & analyses subject data, results • S/W analysis programs supplied • “Breathalyzer” for fatigue impairment Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net

  18. Benefits of Screening • Enhances operating environment • Improves reliability, performance, productivity • Reduces incidents, accidents, risk • Reduces loss, reduces costs • Improves morale • Strong deterrence for substance abuse Advanced Aviation Technology www.aatl.net
