  18. A PRELIMINARY STUDY OF THE UNSTEADY STATES OF THE VENTILATION PARAMETERSAT THE LONGWALL FACE DURING THE SHEARER OPERATION Summary • Absolute pressures registered in the area of the longwall show considerable changeability. During coal winning and movement of a shearer in longwall evident effects of pressure changes were observed. • Movement of a shearer in longwall have an impact upon temporary and local disturbances of airflow what was registered by an anemometer installed at the longwall. Large dimensions of machines used in heavy duty longwalls, asa mobile obstacle limiting the corss-section of the longwallduring coal winning process, createsa local increase in air velocity. • During coal winning in a longwall one can observe methane concentration increase at sequent methanometers alongside the longwall in conformity with direction of airflow. At the same time one can see the effect of convection of methane in the airflow direction. • The investigations have confirmed that disturbances of ventilation conditions induced by movement of a shearer have a local character. Emission of methane caused by coal winning has an essential influence on formation of methane concentration distribution in the longwall.
