Recycling PPD Creates Avenues Of Sustainability In Construction And Design In 2007, Physical Plant Division recycled: 9,435,260 total pounds of waste material @ an average of 786,280 pounds per month. Overall, PPD recycled more than 30% of UF’s total waste stream. • 4,043,220 pounds of compostable material • 3,359,060 pounds of paper and cardboard • 881,640 pounds of scrap metal • 733,500 pounds of concrete • 189,800 pounds of bottles and cans • 132,360 pounds of electronic equipment During Spring Break 2008, PPD replaced over 10,000 square feet of dilapidated carpet on the fifth floor of the Marston Science Library. The new sustainable carpet is primarily made from recycled materials. PPD also re-painted the fifth floor walls with environmentally-friendly low-VOC latex paint. This project is the first in a scheduled yearly floor-by-floor replacement of the library’s old carpet with recycled carpet, as part of PPD’s continuing commitment to sustainability.

Energy Conservation • Exterior/Industrial Lighting • In 2008, PPD began installing new induction lighting fixtures • These fixtures use 1/3 as much wattage as a fluorescent fixture, last 100,000 hours and are 4x as bright • Office/Classroom Lighting • in 2003, PPD replaced 98% of UF indoor T12 fluorescent fixtures with more efficient T8 fixtures, saving the University over $2,200,000 • in 2005, PPD de-lamped numerous hallways and common areas, saving the University nearly $100,000 • Chiller Plant Optimization • In 2006, PPD established a centralized monitoring and control room to more efficiently run campus chilled water plants • This allows PPD to meet campus air-conditioning needs with the least amount of operating equipment, significantly reducing the overall energy cost • Water Conservation • 3 million gallons per day of wastewater are processed at PPD’s Wastewater Treatment Plant, to be used for irrigation and energy production at the CoGen Power Plant • PPD is in the final stages of construction of a new 1.5 million gallon reclaimed water tank (left) off Lemerand Drive

Sustainable Landscaping Florida-Friendly Landscaping (also known as Xeriscaping) is a landscaping philosophy that emphasizes using native and drought-resistant plants, which do not require supplemental irrigation. PPD Grounds Department uses this philosophy in over 80% of our landscape applications, and more than half of those applications use native plants. Over 98% of our campus irrigation (about a million gallons per day) is done with reclaimed water, harvested rainwater, and gray (waste) water. Less than 2% of campus is irrigated with potable water.

  8. Alternative Fuels Ethanol PPD Motor Pool dispenses E85 ethanol fuel at its pumps from a 2000-gallon tank on our service site. Ethanol provides a clean-burning, renewable alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Bio-Diesel PPD Motor Pool uses a 20% bio-diesel blend in all UF fleet diesel vehicles. Our bio-diesel blend is produced from soybean products.

  10. Vehicle Reduction Zipcar Service Zipcar offers transportation alternatives to UF students, faculty and staff. There are eight Zipcars on the UF campus, which can be rented by the hour, including fuel, parking and insurance. Zipcars preserve greenspace by reducing parking spaces and infrastructure, lowering fuel consumption, and reducing road congestion. Campus Cab Campus Cab is a free point-to-point taxi service offered by PPD. The service provides transportation for University of Florida faculty and staff, on the Main Campus, East Campus, and some UF facilities in Alachua County. Campus Cab reservations may be made by calling 392-1121. PPD Pooled Vehicles/Fleet Reduction Since 2006, PPD has eliminated 34 work vehicles, reducing its overall fleet by 15%. This concept has resulted in increased usage per vehicle, lower fuel consumption, and a reduction in fleet maintenance costs.
