  1. Andy Walton’s Weekly World Watch May 30 – June 5 2004 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” Ezekiel 33:6

  2. What is this world watch all about? I decided each week to look at key events that had happened in that week and look at them with the Bible in hand. I hope to build up a picture of Gods hand working in the affairs of this world bringing about that day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle which will be brought to end when the Lord Jesus Christ physically returns from heaven to set up Gods kingdom. The key areas which will crop up time and again will be • Israel – Middle East the growing conflict • Europe – the developing union / political and religious • Russia – continued turning back to anti west ways • The development of King of South – US & UK • Declining moral standards and increasing violence.   3. Weekly Developments These are just a few of the events that have caught my eye in the previous week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Bible viewpoint. Headlines These are always headlines printed in the newspaper – the date is always given and which paper. Normally the Daily Telegraph. (DT) Event This is usually the newspapers take on the events that have happened. It will always be a direct quote from the newspaper. Comment This is my take on why it is interesting from a Bible point of view. The idea of this weekly world watch is to give a quick Biblical perspective without going into detail. If more detail is needed please email me. Bible Quote This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context.

  5. Tony Blair’s liberal imperialism Headline Is Tony Blair's liberal imperialism working? Headline DT 30 May Event On April 22, 1999, in a speech in Chicago, Tony Blair famously declared his new "doctrine" of international relations. His starting point was the bombing of Serbia - a use of military force that did not have the sanction of the UN. Mr Blair pleaded with America to "never fall again for the doctrine of isolationism". He insisted that "we cannot turn our backs on conflicts and the violations of human rights in other countries if we want to be secure". The Blair Doctrine represented an enormously ambitious attempt to extend the scope of military intervention in order to "spread our values'. Five years and two further invasions - of Afghanistan and Iraq - later, Mr Blair has reiterated the same ideas. Comment This interesting article shows how much Blair has followed this doctrine during his premiership. Far from blindly following the US into Iraq, Blair actively promoted the invasion as it fitted into his doctrine of intervention. It was Blair remember who produced the Iraq dossier to ‘prove’ to the world that Saddam had WMD. In other words Britain is acting as the Old Lion with the young lions acting WITH HER. Killings at Saudi compound Headline Briton feared dead as militants attack oil companies - Headline DT 30 May Event There were no residents left at the Oasis Residential Resort, after 22 people were butchered at the weekend by al-Qaeda sympathisers who went on a shooting spree before taking about 50 people hostage there. The House of Saud is one of the world’s most enduring ruling dynasties. Its stability has given it experience and family ties have held it together through strains and emergencies. Now the royal family faces a crisis. Comment Dedan in the Bible refers to the area of Saudi Arabia. We know from a number of passages eg Ezekiel 38:13 that Britain and the young lions will be associated with this area when the final invasion of Israel comes. The cartoon above (in The Times newspaper this week) shows the USA and Saudi characters bobbing about on a lake of oil with a match thrown in with terrorism written on it. It is the Saudi’s support of the USA and also in turn it’s support of Israel that is causing this terrorism. Bible Quote – Jeremiah 49 Saudi Arabia is the worlds largest oil producer. Could “dwelling deep”refer to the oil wells that that they in effect inhabit? 8 Flee ye, turn back, dwell deep, O inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time that I will visit him.

Williams visits Marian shrine Headline Practise three Rs for peace, says Williams Headline DT 1 June Event The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, called on Christians yesterday to practise the three Rs of religious life – “relate, relinquish and receive”. Dr Williams was preaching to churchgoers from all parts of Britain at the annual Anglican pilgrimage to the Marian shrine in Walshingham, Norfolk, which was recently voted England’s favourite spiritual place in a poll of BBC Radio 4 listeners. Referring to the Magnificat he said “We need to hear Our Lady’s challenge;she sings for the insulted and injured everywhere” Comment Dr Williams was asked recently what was more important truth or unity. He replied “unity”. His actions speak of that as well. For where is the truth behind worshipping at a Marian shrine. This is idol worship that goes back to the time of Babel with Nimrod and Semeramis. It emerged again in Babylon and is once again prominent in this world. The worship of Mary has been promoted more than ever by the current Pope and now by the head of the Protestant church of this country. Bible Quote – Ephesians 6 NB spiritual wickedness in high places 12 For we wrestle …. against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Bush visits Pope Headline Bush is given Papal lecture on Iraq Headlines DT 5 June Event The Pope sharply rebuked President George W Bush yesterday over his policy in Iraq as tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Rome to demonstrate against the presidential visit. Speaking from an ornate wheelchair in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace, with Mr Bush sitting stern-faced to his right, the Pope said that the president was making his visit at a time when there was "great concern" over the instability of the Middle East. The blunt message was the price Mr Bush paid for being seen next to one of the world's greatest moral authorities - and a harsh critic of the Iraq war - only months before the presidential election. Comment Surely we are seeing before our very eyes a “king of the earth” committing “fornication” with the “great whore”. It is vile language to describe the vile situation. We know that Rome is the false religion spoken of in Revelation. The Pope declares himself to be the Holy Father. And here is the world’s most powerful man wanting to be seen with him to try to secure a few more Catholic votes in the up and coming presidential elections. Protests in Italy Headline Italian protesters rally for 'B-Day' Headline BBC online 4 June Event Tens of thousands of people have been marching in Rome in a protest against the visit by US President George W Bush. Helicopters circling overhead are tracking the protesters. The atmosphere is tense. Protesters are shouting "Yankees go home!". Angry young people have been splashing paint on walls, scrawling anti-American graffiti and flying American flags upside down, painted with swastikas. They are protesting against the American occupation of Iraq and the involvement of Italian troops. There were furious words from many of the people I spoke to. "Mr Bush should run away from Rome," said one young man. "The Middle East is going to become like a bomb." Comment There is growing hatred for the USA in the world. Not only in Arab states but also in Europe. It is strange that just when the world is remembering the day when America liberated Rome 60 years ago, people are on the streets in their 1000’s telling the US president to go home. Bible Quote – Luke 21 we see in symbol the sea and waves roaring 25 ..upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Jordan appeals to save Dead Sea Headline Jordan appeals to save Dead Sea Headline BBC online 2 June Event Jordan has launched an appeal to the international community to save the Dead Sea from extinction. It said the world's saltiest body of water, found at the lowest point on the Earth's surface, will disappear in 50 years' time unless more water is pumped into it. It has proposed that nearly two billion cubic metres of water per year be pumped from the Red Sea into the Dead Sea. The project, dubbed the Red Dead Initiative, has been promoted at an international water management conference taking place at the Dead Sea in Jordan. Comment The Dead Sea is the lowest point on the earth’s surface. It is the area where Sodom and Gomorrah were probably situated and subsequently destroyed. It is a symbol of mankind. It is interesting to note that even the water there is drying up and though futile efforts will be made to save it we know that only the coming of our Lord Jesus will restore it. For it is only Jesus who can save man from his sin and make him alive again. We long for the time when the Dead Sea shall be restored to a living sea. Bible Quote - Zechariah 14 the former sea = Dead sea 8 ¶ And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea:
