While hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes get the most news coverage, floods are by far the most common disaster each and every year. The major floods like the ones we see on the television do happen a few times a year, but the ones that hit closest to home or the small floods that can destroy a house. Flooding in the basement is not only an expensive problem to fix, but it can damage any valuables that may be irreplaceable. Being prepared for the possibility of a flood can keep you one step ahead and also prepare you on how to deal with a flood if it ever occurred to your house. Here are ways that you can prepare for a flood. Most floods happen from outside drainage problems that cause easy build up of water around your house. Make sure your house is set up so that there is a slop that goes away from your foundation walls and allows water to travel into your yard, instead of into your house. If your house is not built this way, you may want to invest in some landscaping to produce that slope that can carry water away. Check your gutters and downspouts for any type of drainage problems. One of the most common problems is when an animal or bird may build a nest in your gutters, which can lead to clogging problems. Use a vacuum or water hose to free your gutters of debris such as leaves and mud that may have built up in your gutters. These problems can lead to a buildup of water that could leak through your roof and walls. Invest in buying a hydromatic sump pump for your house. A sump pump can be a very useful tool and save you thousands of dollars in flood damage costs. Newer homes are usually built with the ability or already have a sump pump in the basement. For those with older homes it is best to have a professional install a sump pump into your house. What sump pumps do is provide a drainage system for any water build up and automatically disperse this water from the house. One idea is to install two separate sump pumps in your house to combat any type of drainage issues if one fails in an emergency. Because these sump pumps are plugged into an outlet it is important to have a backup generator available in case of a major disaster.

  2. If you live in an area with heavy rainfall or by water you are always at risk for a flood. Instead of waiting for this disaster to happen to you, it is best to be prepared for this event. Using the techniques above will help you in case of a flood.
