  1. All about ICSI Fertility Treatment: Things You Need to Know ICSI fertility treatment is one of the most important advancements in the field of medicine. It is recommended for couples who are having fertility issues and are struggling to conceive. ICSI stands for Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection and it treats male factor infertility including azoospermia or zero sperm count, low sperm count, and low sperm motility. Here are some of the things that you should know about ICSI fertility treatment: Direct fertilisation ICSI is like IVF but different. The two are the same in the sense that both involve collecting eggs and sperm cells. The difference is in how the sperm fertilises the egg. In IVF, the woman’s eggs and the male sperm cells are placed in a petri dish where they are left to fertilise on their own. There is always a risk that fertilisation won’t occur in IVF treatment if the sperms don’t go through the egg’s cytoplasm. ICSI fertility treatment eliminates that risk. The embryologist injects a sperm cell directly into the egg, thus facilitating direct fertilisation. Treating male factor infertility ICSI works best for those with sperm-related infertility because, in this type of treatment, the sperm is given extra assistance. The number of sperms doesn’t count. To increase the chances of fertilisation, the healthiest, strongest, and most viable sperm cell is chosen and injected into the egg. ICSI fertility treatment is not only for males suffering from low sperm count but also for those who can’t reverse their vasectomy. It is also recommended for couples who have tried and failed at standard IVF treatment. In some cases, ICSI may be recommended for women over the age of 40 and whose oocytes have thicker outer shells that may increase the risk of failed fertilisation. ICSI can help boost the chances of success. Higher chances of pregnancy Compared to IVF, ICSI has a higher success rate. Although success isn’t guaranteed, there is a higher chance of getting pregnant because the sperm is introduced directly into the egg. Another reason why the success rate is higher is because the fertilisedeggs are monitored in the lab for normal growth and development. The doctors choose the best-fertilisedegg to implant into the womb through IVF. Reports support this claim, showing that of all ICSI procedures 85% of them resulted in successful pregnancies.
