  1. Take an Outdoor Yoga Class and Connect with Nature

  2. Yoga is an ancient practice that originated in India, which focuses on mental clarity and – in the process – increases physical strength, flexibility and overall wellbeing. Many other regions of the world have since discovered the benefits of yoga and adapted the practice to meet their own needs. The foundation of yoga is comprised of physical postures, breathing exercises, an ethical code, and meditation techniques designed to help us connect with our inner selves and keep our bodies and minds healthy and fit.

  3. The health benefits of yoga: A wide range of health benefits has been attributed to yoga over the centuries, and increasing numbers of research studies are confirming that practitioners receive both psychological and medical benefits – from reducing stress levels to improved posture to lower blood pressure. Physical strength, flexibility and balance can all be improved with regular yoga practice, and – when practiced properly and appropriately – it offers a safe and low-impact form of exercise.

  4. Scientific studies have concluded that regular yoga practice aids those suffering with high blood pressure, heart disease, back pain, depression, stress, anxiety, and a wide range of bodily aches and pains. Beyond the physical benefits, however, yoga can also help you to connect not only with both your inner self and with nature as well. Outdoor yoga classes help you connect with nature: In the western world, yoga classes are often conducted within the confines of a studio. These can be a relaxing and soothing experience, particularly if there is soft lighting and a quiet, calm setting.

  5. Being indoors allows for greater control of the environment and creates a contemplative space with few distractions. For the most part, this is often the preferred setting, as it is the most conducive to experiencing the deepest aspects of the practice. That being said, there can be tremendous benefits to mixing up the routine on occasion and practicing yoga outdoors can provide a refreshing change of pace. In fact, outdoor yoga is becoming increasingly popular, and city parks, roof decks, flat beaches and even out on the water on a paddleboard are popular options.

  6. For many of us, being surrounded by nature can make us feel at ease, particularly if we normally spend a lot of our time cooped up inside an office or stuck at home handling chores. We often find ourselves distanced from the natural world, so practicing yoga surrounded by grass and trees under an expansive sky can help us to reintegrate. One of the translations of the word “yoga” is “union”, and this sense of uniting with others and with the outside world is a key component of yoga’s philosophy. Practicing yoga in a natural setting can serve as an important bridge to understanding that aspect of the discipline.

  7. And, while taking an hour or so out of your week to practice outdoors can be a great introduction to this, a yoga retreat in a beautiful natural setting can provide an even more immersive and rewarding experience. What is a yoga retreat? Yoga retreats are a way to escape for a few days and spend time practicing yoga, meditating, and participating in a range of activities with a group of like-minded individuals. Retreats are usually set in idyllic surroundings, and offer the opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural world.

  8. On offer are daily yoga classes and meditation sessions as well as activities such as horseback riding, surfing, hiking, and more. You’ll eat fresh, healthful meals that will revitalize you and have the opportunity to enjoy spa treatments such as massage, body scrubs, reflexology, and beyond. A yoga retreat offers the perfect time to reconnect with nature. Oftentimes, several classes will be held outside, giving you a direct integration of your practice with the world around you. Perhaps yoga is held on the beach or in an open-air studio or meditation is offered on a roof deck or while wandering mindfully through a labyrinth.

  9. With fewer distractions and less need to be glued to your electronic gadgetry, you’ll find less of a pull toward work or other concerns back at home. This will allow more space to tune into your natural surroundings and find a greater appreciation of the world around you. Whether you’re practicing yoga or meditation outside, exploring on a hike or in a sea kayak, or just wandering the beach or admiring the stars from a hammock, you’re sure to reconnect with the natural world around you in a powerful way.

  10. Interestingly, this connection to the external environment will also improve your awareness of your own internal rhythms as well. You’ll be more likely to notice your breathing patterns or where you may be holding stress in your body. You’ll recognize how eating a well and stepping away from being tethered to electronics can impact the way you feel and even the quality of your sleep. Spending time out in the great outdoors with a mindful intention will lead to an expansion of your awareness. You’ll recognize both a deeper connection to nature and a deeper connection to yourself.
