Health Care Coverage • 92% of adults had health care coverage • 8% were without coverage • Ohio-12%, U.S.-14% (2006 BRFSS) • Regional – 6% - 12% • 76% of adults considered their healthcare coverage to be adequate • 19% of adults received a prescription from a doctor in which they did not get filled • 35% of those without healthcare coverage

Health Care Access • 78% of adults reported having one particular doctor or healthcare professional they go to for routine medical care • Of those who do not have a usual source (22%), they gave the following reasons: • Did not need a doctor (33%) • Go to two or more places (24%) • Did not have insurance (12%) • Wood County adults gave the following reasons of why they changed doctors the last time: • Provider moved or retired (29%) • Dissatisfied with former provider (21%) • Changed healthcare coverage (17%) • They moved (16%)

  32. Asthma • 17% were diagnosed with asthma • 14% of Ohio adults have been diagnosed with asthma (2006 BRFSS) • Regional 9% - 17% • Those most likely to have asthma were: • Those under the age of 30 (19%) • Those with incomes less than $25,000 (19%)

  34. Diabetes • 7% were diagnosed with diabetes • Ohio- 8%, U.S.- 7% (2006 BRFSS) • Regional 8% - 12% • 8% were diagnosed with pre-diabetes • Of those with diabetes, the following methods were used to control their diabetes: • Diet control (67%) • Diabetes pills (57%) • Insulin (27%)

Adult Weight Control • 70% of all Wood County adults were calculated to be overweight or obese by Body Mass Index (BMI). • 30% of adults were obese • Ohio- 25%, U.S.- 28% (2006 BRFSS) • Region- 27%-36% • 24% had not been participating in any physical activities or exercise in the past week • 50% of adults were trying to lose weight. • Wood County adults spent an average of 2.5 hours watching television, 0.2 hours playing video games, and 0.7 hours on the computer outside of work on an average day.

Youth Weight Control • 16% of Wood County youth were classified as obese by BMI • 44% were trying to lose weight, increasing to 54% of females • 62% of youth had participated in at least 20 minutes of physical activity at least 3 times in the past week • The following foods were eaten at least once/day in the past week: • 100% Fruit Juice (36%) • Vegetables (36%) • Drank 1 glass of milk (60%) • The average number of times youth ate out in a restaurant or brought home take out food was 2.4 times.

Youth Weight Control • Wood County youth spent an average of 2.6 hours watching television, 1.3 hours playing video games, and 2.2 hours on the computer on an average day of the week. • 43% of youth spent 3 or more hours watching television on an average day of the week. • Ohio- 36%, U.S.- 37% (2005 YRBSS) • 76% of youth participated in extracurricular activities: - Sports or intramurals (28%) - Youth group (3%) - Club or social organization (10%) - Church (1%) - Some other organized activity (4%)

Adult Tobacco Use • 23% of all Wood County adults were current smokers • Ohio- 22%, U.S.- 20% (2006 BRFSS) • Regional 20% - 28% • Current smokers tended to belong to the following groups: • Those with incomes less than $25,000 (41%) • Those under the age of 30 (35%) • Married adults (35%) • 33% were former smokers • 52% of all smokers had tried to quit in the past year • 6% of all adults currently used chewing tobacco or snuff

Youth Tobacco Use • 15% of all Wood County youth were smokers • Compared to 24% of Ohio and 23% of U.S. youth (2005 YRBSS) • Regional 10% - 19% • 39% of smokers had tried to quit in the past year • 4% had used chewing tobacco in the past month • Compared to 8% of Ohio and U.S. youth (2005 YRBSS) • Regional 4% - 8% • 20% of smokers smoked less than one cigarette per day
