  1. Matthew Chapter 7

  2. Matthew 5:1-2 1And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: 2And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

  3. Matthew 7:1-2 1Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

  4. Matthew 8:15-17 15Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. 16But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. 17And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

  5. Passing Judgment • Whole passage is to believers • Cf. Rom 14:4-13; 1 Cor 4:5 • There are occasions we are to judge within • the fellowshipCf. 1 Cor 5 • We are not to judge the intent of the heart; • we are to be fruit inspectors • Scripture does not say that you cannot go • to law against a brother; there are some • procedures we should invoke first • Mat 18:15

  6. Matthew 7:3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

  7. Matthew 7:4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

  8. Matthew 7:5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

  9. Matthew 7:6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

  10. Matthew 7:7-8 7Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

  11. Matthew 7:7-8 7Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

  12. Matthew 7:7-8 7Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

  13. Matthew 7:9-10 9Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? 10Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?

  14. Matthew 7:11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

  15. Matthew 7:12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

  16. The Golden Rule • Confused with K’ung Fu-Tze, a writer in • china, also known as Confucius • - He says don’t do that which you don’t • want people to do to you. It’s negative • and it’s passive • - Same idea also found in the Talmud, • again in the negative, don’t do that to • somebody else that which you don’t want • him or her to do to you

  17. The Golden Rule • “Therefore” implies a linkage to the • previous verse • - What Jesus is expressing is not just an ethical • principle: He is linking this practice with a • supernatural agency of the Father • The Golden Rule does not include the gospel: • it is the fruit of the gospel • The concept of the Golden rule as described • by Confucius or the Talmud, is not a • declaration of God’s love: this is. • - It is positive, and an active imperative.

  18. Matthew 7:13-14 13Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

  19. 1 Peter 3:18-20 18For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 19By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

  20. Genesis 24: 54And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master. 55And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.

  21. Matthew 7:13-14 "Broad is the road that leads to death, And thousands walk together there; But wisdom shows a narrower path, With here and there a traveller.” Watts

  22. Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

  23. Matthew 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

  24. Matthew 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

  25. Matthew 7:18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

  26. Matthew 7:19-20 19Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

  27. Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

  28. Matthew 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

  29. Zechariah 3:8-10 8Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH. 9For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day. 10In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine and under the fig tree.

  30. Matthew 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

  31. Personal Jeopardy There are supernatural spirits that will attempt to seduce you. 1 Tim 4:1 You can be derailed by pseudo-intellectualism, the prattling of science or knowledge falsely so-called Col 2:8; 1 Tim 6:20 Does our Shepherd lose His sheep? Not this shepherd John 10:27-30

  32. Matthew 7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

  33. Matthew 7:25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

  34. Expositional Constancy The theory that an idiom is used the same way throughout Scripture: - “Rock”: Exodus, Numbers: the rock is Jesus Christ 1 Cor 10:4 - Stone Builders rejected Ps 118:22; Isa 8:14; Mat 21:42, 44; Acts 4:11; 2 Pet 2:6-8 Headstone of the corner Gen 49:24; Isa 28:16 Dan 2:34,35; Mark 12:10; Luk 20:17; Eph 2:20 - Sure foundation:Isa 28:16; Rom 9:33

  35. Matthew 7:26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

  36. Matthew 7:27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

  37. Matthew 7:28-29 28And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: 29For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

  38. The Law • He did not set aside the Law of Moses, He • fulfilled it! • - He takes the Law of Moses, interprets it in • the extreme, and in an absolute sense. • And then He absolutely fulfills it! • Our salvation does not accrue because of • our ability to fulfill Matthew 5, 6, and 7, • but because Jesus did; • - and we can appropriate His achievement • to our benefit for our salvation.

  39. The Law “I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil” Not to subvert, abrogate, or annul, but to establish the law and the prophets — to unfold them, to embody them in living form, and to enshrine them in the reverence, affection, and character of men, am I come.

  40. The Law This section presents the heart of Jesus’ message, for it demonstrates His relationship to the Law of God. Jesus was not presenting a rival system to the Law of Moses and the words of the Prophets, but a true teaching and true interpretation of the Law and the Prophets.
