  11. “You are like salt for the whole human race. But if salt loses its saltiness, there is no way to make it salty again. It has become worthless, so it is thrown out and people trample on it.” (Matthew 5:13)

  12. “You are like light for the whole world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; instead it is put on the lampstand, where it gives light for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

  13. “Do not think I have come to get rid of what is written in the Law or in the Prophets. I have not come to do that. Instead, I have come to give full meaning to what is written.” (Matthew 5:17)

  14. Blessed are you poor? • “Who sinned, this man or his parents?” • Jesus answered, “His blindness has nothing to do with his sins or his parents’ sins.” (John 9:1-2)

  15. Happy are you spiritually poor?

  16. Happy are those who are humble? • “I am gentle and humble in spirit.” (Matthew 11:29)

  17. Happy are those who are persecuted?

  18. “I tell you, then, that you will be able to enter the Kingdom of heaven only if you are more faithful than the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees in doing what God requires.” (Matthew 5:20)

  19. “You’re familiar with the command to the ancients, ‘Do not murder.’ I’m telling you that anyone who is so much as angry with a brother or sister is guilty of murder.” (Matthew 5:21,22 – The Message) • “You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' But now I tell you: anyone who looks at a woman and wants to possess her is guilty of committing adultery with her in his heart.” (Matthew 5:27-28)

  20. Polar opposite view of the Messiah and the new Kingdom • The bar for entering the Kingdom is seemingly higher than the Pharisees careful law-keeping • Don’t hate; don’t even desire….love your enemies • Jesus “out-legalizes” the legalists

  21. “It was also said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce.’ But now I tell you: if a man divorces his wife for any cause other than her unfaithfulness, then he is guilty of making her commit adultery if she marries again; and the man who marries her commits adultery also.’” (Matthew 5:31-32)

  22. “Some Pharisees came and tried to trap Him with this question: ‘Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife for just any reason?’ ‘Haven’t you read the Scriptures?’ Jesus replied. ‘They record that from the beginning 'God made them male and female.' And He said, 'This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.' Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.’ ‘Then why did Moses say in the law that a man could give his wife a written notice of divorce and send her away?’ they asked. • Jesus replied, ‘Moses permitted divorce only as a concession to your hard hearts, but it was not what God had originally intended.’” (Matthew 19:3-8 NLT)

  23. “You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.' But now I tell you: do not take revenge on someone who wrongs you. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, let him slap your left cheek too. And if someone takes you to court to sue you for your shirt, let him have your coat as well. And if one of the occupation troops forces you to carry his pack one mile, carry it two miles. When someone asks you for something, give it to him; when someone wants to borrow something, lend it to him.” (Matthew 5:38-42)

  24. “You have heard that it was said, 'Love your friends, hate your enemies.' But now I tell you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may become the children of your Father in heaven. For he makes his sun to shine on bad and good people alike, and gives rain to those who do good and to those who do evil. Why should God reward you if you love only the people who love you? Even the tax collectors do that! And if you speak only to your friends, have you done anything out of the ordinary? Even the pagans do that! You must be perfect---just as your Father in heaven is perfect.” (Matthew 5:43-48)

  25. “If you love only the people who love you, why should you receive a blessing? Even sinners love those who love them! And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you receive a blessing? Even sinners do that! And if you lend only to those from whom you hope to get it back, why should you receive a blessing? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount! No! Love your enemies and do good to them; lend and expect nothing back. You will then have a great reward, and you will be children of the Most High God. For he is good to the ungrateful and the wicked.” (Luke 6:32-35)

  26. Perfection • “In a word, what I’m saying is, Grow up. You're kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.” (Matthew 5:48 – MSG)

  27. “When Jesus finished saying these things, the crowd was amazed at the way he taught. He wasn’t like the teachers of the Law; instead, he taught with authority.” (Matthew 7:28-29)

  28. Love your enemies • “If you happen to see your enemy's cow or donkey running loose, take it back to him. If his donkey has fallen under its load, help him get the donkey to its feet again; don't just walk off.” (Exodus 23:4-5)

  29. “The enemy” in Jesus day • The Romans • “Carry the pack an extra mile…” • “I have never found anyone in Israel with faith like this” (Matthew 8:10) • The Heathen • Canaanite woman: • “His disciples came to him and begged him, ‘Send her away! She is following us and making all this noise!’” (Matthew 15:23) • “You are a woman of great faith!” (Matthew 15:28)

  30. “The enemy” in Jesus day • Samaritans • “(Jews will not use the same cups and bowls that Samaritans use.)” (John 4:9) • “At that moment Jesus' disciples returned, and they were greatly surprised to find him talking with a woman.” (John 4:27)

  31. “The enemy” in Jesus day • The poor & the sick • “A man suffering from a dreaded skin disease came to Jesus, knelt down, and begged him for help. "If you want to," he said, "you can make me clean." Jesus was filled with pity, and reached out and touched him. "I do want to," he answered. "Be clean!" (Mark 1:40-41) • Evidence: The Pharisees reaction to Jesus’ miracles

  32. “The enemy” in Jesus day • The “riff raff”: tax collectors, prostitutes… • “Later when Jesus was eating supper at Matthew's house with his close followers, a lot of disreputable characters came and joined them. When the Pharisees saw him keeping this kind of company, they had a fit, and lit into Jesus' followers. "What kind of example is this from your Teacher, acting cozy with crooks and riffraff?" (Matthew 9:10-11, The Message)

  33. “Leader of Anti-Semitic Party in Hungary Discovers He’s Jewish” • Jews are “lice-infested, dirty murderers.” • “Szegedi discovered that his mother was a Jew… According to Jewish law, that makes Szegedi Jewish, too. Not only that, but Szegedi's grandmother survived Auschwitz and his grandfather survived labor camps.” • Csanad Szegedi

  34. “Szegedi decided to plan a trip to Auschwitz…he apologized “for any comments he had made against the Jewish community” and would like to make the trip to “pay his respects to the Holocaust martyrs.”

  35. “Our enemies are those who harbor hostility against us, not those against whom we cherish hostility...As a Christian I am called to treat my enemy as a brother and to meet hostility with love. My behavior is thus determined not by the way others treat me, but by the treatment I receive from Jesus.” - Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  36. “Do to us what you will and we will still love you...But be assured that well wear you down by our capacity to suffer, and one day we will win our freedom. We will not only win freedom for ourselves; we will appeal to your heart and conscience that we will win you in the process; and our victory will be a double victory.”Martin Luther King, Jr.
