  2. What is genetics? • Genetics is the study of heredity, or what makes organisms differ from one another… • the transmission of characteristics from one generation to the next… • and changes based on heredity.

  3. Where did the word come from? Genetics is based on the word gene. What is a gene? It is a basic unit of heredity.

  4. Each gene directs the development of one ormore traits. • Each gene represents one discrete section of one chromosome. (one single strand of DNA) • There are many different versions. • Each different version is called an allele.

  5. Population Genetics • …is the study of how genetic principles apply to the entire population. • Population genetics has to take into account ecological and evolutionary factors such as population size, migration patterns, and mating selection.

  6. Inbreeding: Why is it bad? • Inbreeding is bad because it mixes two genetic structures of the same gene pool and causes the variance to be limited. • Not for the baby. It’s been known to happen that most babies born under same family relatives have had bad coloring, speech and hearing disorders. Is it safe?

  7. Definitions • gene pool: the total genetic information present in all members of a population or series • gene flow: the exchange of genetic information among populations as a result of migration • genetic variance: variance in allele frequency among samples taken from a population or among sub populations
