Fad Diets • Diet refers to everything you eat and drink • Fad diets approach to weight control that are popular over a short time • Can you think of any fad diets? • Weight cycling • The cycle of losing, regaining, losing, and regaining • Other risky weight loss strategies • Fasting • Liquid Protein Diets (FDA Warning) • Diet Pills (May be addictive!)

  5. Eating Disorders • An obsession with thinness, along with psychological pressures and perhaps genetic factors, can lead to two eating disorders • Anorexia nervosa • Bulimia nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa • A disorder in which the irrational fear of becoming obese results in severe weight loss from self-induced starvation • Psychological disorder • Extremely low caloric intake • Emotional problems • Unnatural interest in food • Unrealistic or distorted body image • Denial of eating problem • Health Problems • Constipation • Heart problems • impaired immune function • Possible death

Bulimia Nervosa • A disorder in which cycles of overeating are followed by forms of purging or clearing the digestive system • Purging - self-induced vomiting or through the abuse of laxatives • Often secretive but know they have a problem • Problems • See picture to right • Why is bulimia not considered a disease?
