    1. RECENT EXPERIENCES AND FUTURE PERSPECTIVES OF nanoZVI - APPLICATIONS FOR GROUNDWATER REMEDIATION Vážení prátelé nanoFe.

    3. 3 Zero-valent iron reacts as reductive agent (it is oxidized) Fe0 ? Fe2+ + 2e- ClH can be reduced with overall reaction 3Fe0 + C2HCl3 + 3H+ ? 3Fe2+ + C2H4 + 3Cl- It was confirmed in laboratory that > 70 compounds can be reduced (Zhang, 2003): TCE, PCE, DDT, PCB, PCM, PCP, lindane, nitrates, Pb, Hg, Ni, Cd, Cr, As, TNT, U, etc. nZVI reactions

    5. 5 Types of nZVI used Zhang´s nZVI Preparation in solution (NaBH4) w/o Pd (0.1%) High cost, small production (RNIP) TODA Dry reduction in oven, wet grinding Surface stabilization Large-scale production NANOFER 25 (NANOIRON) Targeted core-shell structure (project AS) No milling, wet grinding Better mobility and reactivity

    6. 6 Laboratory tests - AOX

    7. 7 optimum properties reactivity with contaminants stability of product before application mobility in aquifer ------------------------------------------- No (minimum) negative effects to environment cost, availability

    13. 13 former Soviet military base CHCs used in a dry cleaner contamination of PCE mainly, concentration over 100 mg/L - DNAPL 1990: 1-st site investigation 1992 – 2001: GW pumping, venting – reduced efficiency from 2004 – new methods: chemical oxidation (permanganate), reduction (lactic acid, nanoFe) Kurivody site

    14. 14 Kurivody site Tracer test Blast fracturing Low final concentrations No rebound

    15. 15 Pisecna –pilot application

    16. 16 PCB – Rozmital p.T.

    17. 17 PCB – pilot test

    18. 18 Laboratory study - Makedonia

    19. 19 Next perspectives Full scale applications (TODA, Nanofer) Tests for other contaminants (still many sites in CZ) Research of nanoparticle mobility Combination with other methods (microbial, lactic acid) Possible negative effect to environment
