  1. Gender Communication “Learning to Talk the Talk” YouTube Clip 1 Images courtesy Google and Information from GenderSpeak: Personal Effectiveness in Gender Communication (5th) Diana K. Ivy

  2. What the %$&* is gender communication? • Gender communication is communication about and between men and women (for the most part) • Communication is not always gender related • Ex. Talking to someone about something mundane like the weather; you find yourself becoming attracted to that other individual

  3. The PPPPU- Why study it? • Provocative-we are all interested in how we are perceived • Popularized-marketable (chick flicks, boy-mance) • Pervasive-occurs every second • Problematic-sex and gender make communication even more complex • Unpredictable- societal norms change everyday yet dictate gender

  4. Sex vs. Gender • Sex- “guy parts and girl parts” • Biological designation of being female or male (some of us change this surgically within our lifetime) • Gender- cultural construction that includes biological sex and psychological characteristics (femininity and masculinity) • Gender identity • Challenging Gender Roles

  5. Communication in Relationships • Men often seek straightforward solutions to problems and useful advice whereas women tend to try and establish intimacy by discussing problems and showing concern and empathy in order to reinforce relationships. • Men vs. Women

  6. Misunderstandings “Debate vs. Relate” • He: I'm really tired. I have so much work to do—I don't know how I'm going to get it done! • She: Me, too. There just aren't enough hours in the day! • He: There you go again! You never think my contributions to this marriage are good enough!

  7. Misunderstandings“Report vs. Rapport” • She: I'm really tired. I have so much work to do—I don't know how I'm going to get it done! • He: Why don't you take a day off and rest, if you're so tired? • She: (sarcastically) Thanks a lot! You think my contribution to this household is so trivial that I can do nothing and the difference won't even be noticed?

  8. Non-verbal Communication • Men take up more space than women • Women have more facial expressions in regards to conversation (head nod) • Men disclose less personal information • Women make less direct statements • Men are more apt. to yell, women cry to release anger.

  9. Gender terms that are misconstrued • Androgyny: Blending of masculine and feminine personality traits (activity 1) • Transgender: Unique gender identity not confined by traditional notions of m & f. • Think of a roundabout! • Feminism: women’s liberation socially, politically, and sexually. (DOES NOT MEAN HATRED OF OPPOSITE SEX  • YouTube Clip 2

  10. What can you do to communicate better? • Listen to the other person and don’t judge them based on their sex or gender. • i.e. Sarah Palin • Try to use non-sexist language • She’s a girl, she can’t do that job! • COMMUNICATE!

  11. Lecture Response • If you could be any person of a gender aside from the one you identify with, who would you be and why? • Select at least 3 qualities that the individual encompasses AND provide examples of those qualities.
