  5. Virginia Company of London • Settled in northern part of Virginia • 1607established Jamestown (1st permanent English settlement) by John Smith at the mouth of the James River in Chesapeake Bay • Located in a swamp • Had mosquitoes • Settlers got sick from water

  6. John Rolfe introduced tobacco to them in 1612 and helped the settlement survive • 1619Virginia House of Burgesses created-1st example of a representative governmentin North America (people select others to make decisions)

  10. Separatists • People who wanted to separate from the Anglican Church in order to establish their own church

  11. VIRGINIA COMPANY OF PLYMOUTH • Pilgrims(Puritans/Separatists) left Europe b/c they were seeking religious freedom • Arrived in 1620 in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and established Plymouth

  12. Signed the Mayflower Compact (1st example of self-government) • They agreed to make and follow their own laws
