Jokowi's Government Turns To Imports To Combat Price Increases In Rice, Jokowi's Government Turns To Imports To Combat Price Increases In Rice, Sugar, And Corn Sugar, And Corn Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi chaired a limited meeting on food commodity prices, especially corn, sugar, and rice, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday, October 9, 2023. The government concluded that the solution to curb the price hikes is imports. Commodity Pricing In Indonesia Following the meeting, Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan stated that sugar and corn prices were gradually rising due to the current global situation, which included conflicts and the El Nino phenomenon. He mentioned, “We will see the changes from week-to-week. We don't want to be late to make decisions.” The price of sugar was set by the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) at Rp12,500 per kilogram, which was less than the government's purchase price of Rp13,000 per kilogram. As of Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at nine in the morning, the Food Agency's (Bapanas) Price Panel revealed that the average price of sugar at the retail level was Rp15,580 per kilogram. He also said, “Bapanas will look for the solution,” and added that sugar importers had only sent about 30% of the total sugar allotment. Agro-Imports By Indonesia Zulkifli affirmed that the government would import 250,000 tons of corn for the animal feed sector. Regarding sugar, a politician from the National Mandate Party (PAN) said the government would first wait for prices to drop before deciding on imports.

  2. In preparation for El Nino's effects, the government is also working with a number of nations to secure rice in case it is required. By importing 1.5 million tons, the government had accumulated stocks. There are 1.7 million tons of rice reserves at the National Logistics Agency (Bulog).
