Hyannis Hostel Opens Summer 2010 HI-Hyannis, the Angeline Crocker Hinckley Hostel, is on track to open its doors on July 1. Extensive renovations to two houses on the property have been possible through a capital campaign led by former board member John Yonce. “Through the generosity of our donors, the project has received much of the funding needed to achieve our goal of a new hostel that will help make travel accessible to everyone who wants to visit Cape Cod,” said Yonce. “The last phase of the project will complete two smaller structures.” The half-acre campus on Hyannis Harbor includes a turn-of-the-century Sears, Roebuck kit house, the former home of donor Ruth Rusher. A Spring Break Alternative The Boston Hostel welcomed nearly 150 college students from as far as Ohio to the Alternative Spring Break Program this season. As community service volunteers, students painted and restored buildings at the Crossroads Family Shelter, sorted and delivered meals at the Greater Boston Food Bank, and cleaned a Long Island community shelter. New this year was a visit to ReVision Urban Farm in Dorchester, where students got their hands dirty learning about and working on a community farm.

Update: A New Hostel for Boston HI-ENEC Welcomes Development Director The financing portion of the project calendar for the new Boston Hostel is nearly complete and includes Federal Historic and New Market tax credits. State Historic tax credits are also being sought. In these efforts, HI-Boston received letters of support from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Boston Landmarks Commission, Preservation Massachusetts, the Boston Preservation Alliance, the Boston City Council, Chinatown Main Streets, as well as State Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz and Representatives John D. Keenan and Aaron Michlewitz, among others. The new hostel project team includes Nixon Peabody Partners, Cleary Advisors, GLC Development Resources LLC, and Bergmeyer Associates, Inc. with Stegman + Associates, Architects. “We are thrilled to move this project forward despite these difficult times,” said Deborah Ruhe, HI-ENEC Executive Director. “With the help of our generous supporters, we will be able to expand our services in the community and continue to achieve our mission.” To stay updated on the continued development of the new Boston Hostel, go to www.hinewengland.org/boston.php. The development of a new hostel in Boston is moving forward with the addition of Susan S. Stendahl, CFRE, who joins the staff as Director of Development.  As the campaign director for the HI-Boston project, Ms. Stendahl brings more than fourteen years of fundraising experience to the task. Prior to joining the team, Ms. Stendahl was an independent development consultant and served as Chief Development Officer for the Girl Scouts of Eastern Mass. She was Chief Development Officer for Pathways for Children in Gloucester, Mass., from 2004 to 2009, where she led the agency through a major re-branding and public awareness program in support of a multi-million dollar capital campaign – the organization’s first. She has also held development positions at VNA Care Network, Montserrat College of Art, and CAB Health and Recovery Services.  “We are delighted to have Susan as part of our team,” said Deborah Ruhe, Executive Director of HI-ENEC.  “Through her skills and dedication, she will help us make the new Boston Hostel a reality.”
