  1. A Lesson on Family • Today we will be looking at how Christians should view marriage & family life. • Much of this lesson will show how God says we should deal with our children. • A God-centered home should be different than a worldly home. • Our household should be structured by God’s plan for the home. • It’ll produce one that’s well pleasing to the Lord; & also a more pleasant one for our family members.

  2. A Lesson on Family

  3. The Marriage Bond • When a man and women get married, God wills for their marriage to last until they die (Gen. 2:24; Mal. 2:16). • And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery. Matt 19:9 (NKJV) • For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. Romans 7:2-3 (NKJV)

  4. The Marriage Bond • God gives the husband & wife excellent instruction on how to maintain a happy marriage (Eph. 5:22-33). • If we are selfish, then our marriage is going to be difficult. • But if we love our spouse like we do ourselves (& we treat them like we want to be treated) then we will have a happy marriage. • Wives are to respect their husbands, because they are supposed to be the head of the household & the spiritual leader (Cf. 1 Cor. 11:3).

  5. A God-Centered Family • Both husband & wife must work every day at being examples to one another, and especially to their children (Eph. 6:4). • You must practice what you preach. • You cannot expect your children to take you seriously when you tell them not to do something, yet you do it yourself.

  6. A God-Centered Family • We must know what our children are doing, and being exposed to (Prov. 29:15). • Families should be worshiping TOGETHER (Mal. 1:6-8; Matt. 6:33; Jn. 6:68). • It is our responsibility to raise our children up knowing God, so that they will be rooted and grounded in His word (Prov. 22:6; Eph. 6:4).

  7. We Must Discipline our Children • For the commandment is a lamp, And the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life, Prov 6:23 (NKJV) • The rod and rebuke give wisdom, But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother. Prov 29:15 (NKJV) • Correct your son, and he will give you rest; Yes, he will give delight to your soul. Prov 29:17 (NKJV)

  8. We Must Discipline our Children • He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly. Prov 13:24 (NKJV) • Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. Prov 23:13 (ESV)

  9. We Must Discipline our Children • He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly. Prov 13:24 (NKJV) • Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. Prov 23:13 (ESV)

  10. We Must Discipline our Children • He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly. Prov 13:24 (NKJV) • Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. Prov 23:13 (ESV)

  11. We Must Discipline our Children • He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly. Prov 13:24 (NKJV) • Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. Prov 23:13 (ESV)

  12. We Must Discipline our Children • He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly. Prov 13:24 (NKJV) • Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. Prov 23:13 (ESV) • The rod and rebuke give wisdom, But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother. Prov 29:15 (NKJV)

  13. We Must Discipline our Children • There are various forms of discipline that we can use that are found in the Bible (Cf. Ezr. 7:26; Exod. 22; Isa. 47:3). • Confiscation of things precious. • Grounding. • Paying restitution. • Impartial acknowledgement of wrong-doing.

  14. Message for the Children • Instructions for you (Eph. 6:1-3). • God wants you to respect your parents. It is your responsibility to obey and honor them. • Be thankful that we are no longer living under the authority of the Old Testament (Deut. 21:18-21). • Be thankful to live under NT authority, appreciating the discipline that you receive. • Respect your parents.

  15. A Lesson on Family • The lesson has stressed how important it is for a God-fearing family to be different than a worldly family. • We should do our best to choose the right mate, and to make our marriages last a lifetime. • We have learned how important it is that we train our children up in the admonition of the Lord: • By setting good examples. • By teaching them what is right in the sight of God. • Bringing them to Bible class & worship. • Disciplining them when it is necessary. • Finally, we learned the children are to obey their parents.
