    1: Middle School Briefing West Point UXO Safety Program In this presentation, I will explain what UXO is, why it is dangerous, and impresses upon you the 3 Rs of what to do if you or someone else comes across UXO. It is important that you are aware of the danger involved with UXO and know what actions you need to take so it doesnt cause any harm to you, your family, or your friends.     Slide 2:UXO is a shortened way of saying unexploded ordnance. U for un, X for exploded, and O for ordnance. What is ordnance? Ordnance is a word that means military supplies, like tanks, helicopters, trucks, ammunition and weapons. Ammunition includes such things like: bullets, hand grenades, mines, missiles, and bombs. Other types of ordnance include: parts, like fuzes, warheads and missile motors, as well as TNT, C-4, and blasting caps. In May 2000, a 16 year old was killed playing with UXO removed from a military base. And his friend was critically injured when the device exploded.     3: Some UXO Is Hard to Identify UXO can be found in many shapes, sizes, and types. Size doesnt matter. Small items can kill or injure. Age doesnt matter. Old rusty items can kill or injure. Items may not look bad, but they are dangerous! This slide shows what some more unexploded ordnance items look like. UXO comes in many shapes and sizes. Items like flares, simulators, and blasting caps dont look threatening, but they are dangerous. Dont be fooled by the word simulator. Simulators are explosive devices that can take a hand off. Size doesnt matter, small items like blasting caps can seriously injure you. Do not assume war souvenirs are safe.     11: Learn What To Do Keep Yourself and Your Friends Safe! Recognize! Retreat! Report! If you find something, or someone else has something - you must know the 3 Rs Recognize Run Report If an area is posted with warning signs - stay out. If an area is known to have been a former munitions sites, like a training range or ammunition factory, stay out. No matter what, dont you touch it.     12: Recognize It. If you find UXO: It may not look deadly - but it is! Leave it alone. Try and remember the area where you found the UXO. If you find something in a military area or a place marked with warning signs - or even if you find it somewhere else (maybe washed up on a beach) leave it alone.     14: Report it! Tell an adult if you find something that could be UXO: a parent a teacher a military police officer a firefighter Call West Point Military Police at: (845) 938-3333 If someone is injured by UXO, call 911 immediately! Think about who you should report this discovery to. You must let a parent, a teacher, or even a policeman or fireman know what you have found. You can even call 911.
