Test Techniques • Means of eliciting behavior from test takers which inform us about their language abilities. • Why we need test techniques? • elicit valid and reliable behavior regarding ability in which we are interested; • will elicit behavior which will be reliably scored; • are economical of time and effort • have a positive backwash effect.

  4. What are the techniques for testing Overall ability • 1- Multiple Choice Items • 2- True/ False items • 3- Short – answers items • 4- Gap filling items

  5. 1- Multiple Choice Items • The usual structure • E.g. Enid has been here ………….half an hour. (stem) • The options (a- during, b- for, c, while, d- since) and the wrong answers are called distractors

  6. Multiple choice • Advantages • Scoring is reliable, rapid and economic • include many more items – making the test more reliable. • Less time for marking

  7. Multiple choice • Disadvantages • Tests only recognition knowledge • Guessing effect on test scores • difficult to write successful items • Backwash may be harmful • Cheating may be facilitated.
