Description. Townline Elementary has approximately 900 children housed in 39 classrooms.Two of the six classes at each grade level house the dual language program.     1. Townline Elementary School Information Night

    2. Description Townline Elementary has approximately 900 children housed in 39 classrooms. Two of the six classes at each grade level house the dual language program. (Three at Kindergarten, First Grade, Second grade and three are anticipated in third grade for the 2009 -2010 school year) All teachers in this building are trained in the Bernstein Artful Learning Model, Understanding by Design and the 6 Traits Writing Program. Official school hours 8:50-3:05 Kindergarten A.M. 8:50-11:35 Kindergarten P.M. 12:20-3:05

    3. Philosophy Townline is guided by the Bernstein Artful Learning Model, which uses the arts as vehicles for learning across the curriculum. It provides an opportunity for learners to construct meaning principally through concept-driven inquiry. Through the universal concepts studied in the Bernstein Model of Learning,Townline students extend their appreciation of the broader world while developing a respect and understanding for other cultures. As part of that cultural understanding, all students at Townline Elementary have the opportunity to learn basic Spanish or to participate in the Dual Language Program.

    4. Curriculum At Townline, Elementary North, Elementary South, and Aspen,we are ALL committed to delivering a quality education utilizing the Hawthorn Curriculum which has been developed based on the Illinois State Learning Standards.

Daily Routine Classroom Language Arts Block Math Block Science/Social Studies Related Arts classes include: Physical Education/Health- 4 times per week Music Class - 2 times per week Art Class- 2 times per week Spanish Class- 2 times per week Kindergarten Physical Education- 2 times per week Music Class- 2 times per week Spanish Class- 1 time per week Possible rotation could be: PE, Art, Music, Spanish and Library

Delivery of Services Townline teachers use a variety of teaching strategies in their classrooms: Understanding By Design Bernstein Artful Model of Learning Dual Language Program Introduction to the Spanish Language Flexible Grouping Great Books, Reading Fluency Response to Intervention (Special Education Services, Reading Specialist, Speech, OT, PT, Social Work, and more… Team partnerships with Learning Center staff Business and Community Partnerships

    9. Bernstein Artful Learning Aligns with State Standards Sequences Four Elements- Experience, Inquiry, Creation, Reflection Links to a “Masterwork” Centers on a Global Concept Incorporates Arts-Based Teaching Strategies Integrates Across the Learning Disciplines

What is Dual Language? 50% native English speakers 50% native Spanish speakers 80% of instruction in Spanish 20% of instruction in English 50/50 Spanish and English in 1st through 5th grade Program goal is to be biliterate, bilingual, and bicultural by 5th grade Program requires a 3 to 6 year commitment to fully accomplish this goal

    11. Introduction to Spanish Those students not in the Dual Language program will be introduced to the Spanish language through: Spanish language sessions (2 times per week, 1 time per week in Kindergarten) Basic classroom vocabulary in both English and Spanish

    12. The integration of these programs will: Lead to multicultural understandings, an attitude of respect and open-mindedness for all people and their cultures and promote responsible citizenship in our students!

    13. Townline Elementary School will: Create a school culture that accommodates, reflects and celebrates the cultures represented in the school. Encourage students to take positive advantage of the diversity within the student body to enrich the learning and lives of the whole school community. Create a climate that offers a safe, secure, stimulating environments to all is learners. Encourage the adults in the community to actively model the profile advocated for the students.

    14. In Summary The Bernstein Artful Learning Model provides a unique philosophy that is closely aligned to the goals of Hawthorn School District. Townline incorporates the dual language program and a Spanish language program which together with the Bernstein philosophy promotes an appreciation for the broader world.
