  1. Water Backflow Prevention

  2. Backflow occurs when water from a customer's property flows backwards into our pipes. This may carry contaminants that can harm people's health. • Backflow is more likely to occur if: • There's a drop in pressure in the main, eg during a main break • Water pressure at the property is higher than at the main, e.g. if a pump is operating on the site. • Backflow prevention devices ensure our water supply isn't contaminated from hazards on a customer's property. They stop water in a customer's water pipe flowing back into our water main.

  3. What causes backflow? • Backflow can only occur when the water delivery main is at a lower pressure than your plumbing system. For example, when there is a burst or ruptured main, during fire fighting operations or if a pump is connected to your water plumbing system. • How can backflow be prevented? • Air Gap • Double Check Valve Assembly • Reduced Pressure Principal Assembly • Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assembly

When should I install a backflow prevention device? • The following will require boundary backflow prevention devices to be fitted at each and every connection to the drinking water supply: • New developments • Redevelopments of existing facilities • Changes to any existing water service • Additions and alterations • Multiple residence and commercial buildings • Applications that involve a fire service. This excludes existing fire services unless alterations are being carried out • All new fire services require a medium rated device

  6. Backflow Testing and Prevention Backflow testing maintenance is mandatory under legislation for the hygiene and prevention of contamination of water.   7. Banjo Nominees will then supply the relevant Water Authority with the test results from each premise via a backflow device. Customers who do not have a device will be responsible for having one installed and the test results must be supplied to the Water Authority.
