  1. Acne: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments This presentation will explore the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for acne, a common skin condition that affects people of all ages. by sofia johnson

  2. Understanding Acne Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. This can lead to the formation of whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts. It primarily affects the face, neck, chest, back, and shoulders.

  3. Acne Causes and Risk Factors Hormonal changes during puberty, menstruation, and pregnancy can trigger acne. Genetics plays a significant role, with a family history of acne increasing the risk. Overproduction of sebum (oil), a natural skin lubricant, can contribute to clogged pores. Certain medications, such as corticosteroids and lithium, can worsen acne. Some studies suggest that a high-glycemic diet may increase acne risk.

  4. Acne Symptoms and Diagnosis Whiteheads (closed comedones): Small, white bumps that are often painless. Blackheads (open comedones): Small, black or dark bumps that are often painless. The dark color comes from oxidized sebum. Papules: Small, red, inflamed bumps that are often tender. Pustules: Papules that contain pus, typically white or yellowish. They can be painful. Nodules: Large, hard, painful lumps that are often located deeper in the skin. Cysts: Large, inflamed, pus-filled lesions that are often painful and can leave scars.

  5. Tretinoin (Retin-A, Renova) A topical retinoid, available by prescription, that helps to unclog pores and reduce inflammation. It can be used to treat mild to moderate acne. Tretinoin can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight, so sunscreen is essential when using it. It can cause dryness, redness, and peeling, particularly in the initial stages of treatment.

  6. Adapalene (Differin) Adapalene is a topical retinoid, available over-the-counter, that helps to unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and prevent acne breakouts. 1 It can take several weeks to see noticeable results, but it is generally well-tolerated. 2 Adapalene can cause dryness, redness, and peeling, especially when first starting treatment. 3

  7. Tazarotene (Tazorac), Benzoyl Peroxide, and Salicylic Acid Tazarotene (Tazorac) is a topical retinoid, available by prescription, that helps to unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and prevent acne breakouts. 1 Benzoyl Peroxide is a topical antibiotic that kills acne-causing bacteria. It is available over-the-counter and by prescription. 2 Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that exfoliates dead skin cells, helps to unclog pores, and reduces inflammation. 3

  8. Azelaic Acid, Benzoyl Peroxide + Clindamycin, and Adapalene + Benzoyl Peroxide Azelaic acid is a topical medication that helps to reduce inflammation and kill acne-causing bacteria. It can be used to treat mild to moderate acne. Benzoyl Peroxide + Clindamycin (Benzaclin, Duac) is a combination topical treatment that kills acne-causing bacteria and reduces inflammation. Adapalene + Benzoyl Peroxide (Epiduo) is a combination topical treatment that helps to unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and kill acne-causing bacteria.
