  2. What is Diabetes ? • A disorder of metabolism--the way the body digests food for energy and growth.

  3. 3 Main Types of Diabetes • Type 1 diabetes ~ Type 1 diabetes is believed to be an autoimmune disease. The body's immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. • Type 2 diabetes ~ Type 2 diabetes is believed to have a strong genetic link, meaning that it tends to run in families. Several genes are being studied that may be related to the cause of Type 2 diabetes. • Gestational diabetes ~ Gestational diabetes is a carbohydrate intolerance of variable severity that starts or is first recognized during pregnancy or the inability of the tissues to absorb glucose from the bloodstream during pregnancy due to a lack of the hormone insulin.

  4. Who Gets Diabetes? • People of any age. • Most common in older people, overweight and sedentary people, African Americans, Alaska Natives, American Indians, Asian and Pacific Islander Americans, and Hispanic Americans. • People with a family history of diabetes.

Causes of Diabetes Type 1 • Type1, also called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a disorder of the body's immune system—that is, its system for protecting itself from viruses, bacteria or any "foreign" substances. • It may run in families. • Environmental factors, such as certain types of viral infections, formula feeding beginning before age 3 months (that is, breastfeeding for less than 3 months, or not at all), and exposure to certain food additives, such as nitrates and nitrosamines, may also contribute. • It is most common in people of non-Hispanic white persons of Northern European descent, followed by African Americans and Hispanic Americans. It is relatively rare in those of Asian descent. • It is slightly more common in men than in women.

Acute Complications to Diabetes • Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) Usually occurs in Type 1 DM Blood glucose level between 300-800 mg/dl Ketones produced from lipolysis Medical emergency • Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar Nonketotic Syndrome (HHNKS) Usually occurs in TYPE II DM Blood glucose between 600-1200 mg/dl No ketones produced • Hypoglycemia Insulin shock or insulin reaction Blood glucose levels fall below 50 mg/dl
