A downfall of solar power is the lack of sufficient sunlight to charge solar batteries, hence the need for alternative charging means. AC to DC chargers or DC to DC chargers are super alternatives for these scenarios. Working with two batteries, DC to DC chargers, referred to as battery to battery chargers, are used to charge batteries using the power of a vehicle's alternator. DC to DC chargersis dependent only on the energy from one battery to charge another battery. These chargers are used to charge batteries using the power of a vehicle's alternator. The aux plug should then be connected to the auxiliary battery side. The unregulated solar input plug should then be connected to the solar panel, the DCDC charger being the solar regulator. Althoughquick charging may not cause immediate harm to the battery, repeated and sustained use of fast charging might hasten the overall decline of the battery over time. Consequences include reduced energy storage capacity, a shorter range, and a higher frequency of battery changes. Because DC to DC chargers provide more power, DC fast charging stations are more expensive to install and operate, and because station owners may pass some of these costs on to drivers, it is not viable to use fast charging every day. The size of the charger will depend on the size of the battery. If the auxiliary battery is 100Ah or less, choose a 25A DC to DC charger, and forbatteries over 100Ah, select the 40A model. It is imperative that the chargers are installed close to the auxiliary battery, and with many installation options available, the best position remainsin front of the radiator and behind the grill. It is possible to charge a DC battery with solar panel, by simply connecting a solar panel directly to a battery by using wires to connect the positive and negative terminals on both. Be aware that without a diode, the electrical charge may leech back into the solar panel. DC to DC battery chargers are extremely handy for regular travellers. When embarking on an off the grid journey, then the travelling miles can be used for charging batteries for camping. It is convenient in adverse weather or geographies where bright sunny days are absent. With all road-worthy vehicles currently having a full charging system onboard, it is sensible to keep a DC to DC charging system as a backup or primary power source for off-grid life. The vehicle does need to be running for a good while to make an impact on charging from the alternator, making the charge potential limited. While solar panels work to generate energy all day, the alternator only works while the engine is running. By having multiple sources of power generation, a dream off-grid lifestyle can be fool-proofed.
