  1. How to Choose the Best Yarns for Hand Knitting How to Choose the Best Yarns for Hand Knitting? ? Alt, Caption - Hand Dyed Yarns for Knitting Knitting is a beautiful craft of transforming yarn into wonderful projects such as sweaters, socks, hats and more just with your own hands. Choosing the best yarns for hand knitting is important for many reasons. You won’t enjoy your crafting experience, the project won’t turn out as you intend to and you may have issues regarding the drape and feel of the knitted fabric. Choosing yarn for your project can seem like a really intimidating task is the many options of yarn sizes, colors, ply, fiber and more. Many times yarn inspires you to take up knitting needles, but it is recommended to not dive into a project just enamored by the yarn.

  2. Here are a few tips that you need to consider when you are choosing the yarn. 1.The weight of the yarn The weight of your yarn is an important factor. If you are following a pattern, the designer will instruct you about yarn weight. Yarn in the craft world is categorized as lace, fingering, DK weight, bulky, etc. The yarn size affects the stitch size. If you are making a blanket or a scarf you can start with any yarn weight according to your requirement but when it comes to socks or a summer vest, you need to work with lighter yarns. Similarly, if you are making a winter project, the yarn selection is different. Lace: The super lightweight yarn is best suited for intricate details such as shawls or doilies. They are generally not recommended for beginners. Fine: Known as fingering weight or sport weight or even as a sock yarn, this is great for light cardigans and baby clothes. Worsted:Also called DK, which stands for “Double Knitting” this is the most commonly used and “knittable” yarn weight (also known as aran weight). The yarn weight works for all kinds of projects from garments, accessories and home décor. Bulky: The thicker yarn and is suitable for warm projects such as jackets, blankets, or rugs. These chunky yarns knit quickly and are also great for craft projects. 2.The project you are making The choice of yarn is dependent on what you are making. If you are planning a garment for summer, it is best to choose lightweight yarns. DK weight yarn is ideal for most of your knitting projects. Also, if you are making socks, the yarn choice is different than the yarn chosen for cardigans or a hat or blankets for your sofa. Besides the yarn weight and color choices, a project will also decide how many yarn skeins will be required. A dishcloth can be done in one skein while a blanket or a sweater will require more. Also, the choice of stitches plays a role in the number of yarn skeins. 3.Yarn Fiber Cotton, wool, silk and other materials, the yarn fiber is available in a wide variety. Choosing the right fiber is also important. Wool is a favorite among knitters, ideal for all projects and seasons. Besides natural wool and cotton, the blends are also preferred for various needs. If you are thinking of something for autumn and winter then you would be looking for warmth while for summer you would want light natural and airy fibers. 4.Swatch Once you’ve selected the yarn before you make the final choice knit a swatch (at least 6 inches /15 cm square). Make sure to use the same knitting needles, yarn and stitch pattern for the

  3. swatch as called for in the pattern. If the project is in the round, it is recommended to make the swatch in the round. After you’ve knit wash and block your swatch. The yarn label will instruct you with blocking instructions. Measure the number of stitches and rows in one inch of the fabric. Do this in several places around your swatch to get an accurate measurement. Place a gauge on the knitted fabric and count with the pointed tip of the knitting needle. If you get the same count as mentioned in the pattern get ready to cast on your project. If not, switch needles and swatch again. If you really like the fabric, you can go ahead with the same but make some calculations first. Write the gauge info on the yarn label and then tie it to the swatch tails. Now that you’ve decided the yarn all you need to do is get started. Symfonie Yarns offers a collection of hand-dyed fibers for knitters and crocheter. Available in merino wool base with nylon and silk blends, the yarns work for all kinds of projects. Discover the palette of soothing 108 semi–solid and variegated yarns.
