  1. Sci fi (Star Wars) What narrative is given to us? • The narrative of the opening scene is from the point of view of the rebel alliance. We see a rebel ship flying towards a planet. We can tell that it is being attacked. When we are inside the ship we see the rebel alliance preparing to attack Darth Vader and the stormtroopers . We get a sense of the classis ‘Good versus Bad’ narrative. From this what do you expect the rest of the films narrative will be from the little information you have seen? • From this opening scene I know that the Rebel alliance are the ‘Good side’ so I would expect to see the rest of the film from their perspective. I would expect to see action and a lot of high technology.

Star Wars Who is the targeted audience for this film ? • This film has been targeted towards a male audience of ages 15-35 How do we know this from the opening sequence and titles? • We know this as all the people in the opening scene apart from princess Leia. Not only this but we are introduced to a lot of fighting and action in the scene which would attract a male audience. Advertised with special effects and high technology which at the time was unheard of.

  3. Star Wars How many characters are introduced and what information do we know about them? What assumptions can you make about them ? How has their representation been constructed through the technical elements? • We are introduced to three 4 main characters in the opening scene. The two first characters that we are introduced to are R2-D2 and C-3PO. We know nothing about them apart from the fact that they are intelligent robots. We don’t even know their names yet. We hear them mention another key name being the ‘princess’ although we do not know her name, we know she is important. When we are finally introduced to who we believe is the princess she is portrayed as shy as she doesn’t say a single word in this whole scene. She is dressed in all white which could connote purity and hope as white is a very pure color. Last, but not least we are introduced to Darth Vader or “Lord Vader”. He is dressed in an all black outfit which connotes evil and darkness. We make the assumption from this that he is the main evil figure in this film.

Star Wars Do you think this is a successful opening scene? • Personally, I think is a really good opening scene because it leaves us asking a lot of questions like: What is the death star?, why does Darth Vader want the plans to the Death Star so much?, what is the princess running from and why?. • I think that the fact that it makes the audience think of these things is great because it make the audience what to know what happens and they want to stay to find out.
