1. Dove-Shooting And Other Opportunities In The South Hunting sports such as whitetail deer hunting in Alabama’s well-known Black Belt region, and great opportunities for the wing-shooter to enjoy an age-old tradition, offer hunters and shooters wonderful chances to partake of those activities that so many Americans hold dear. Hunting is cherished as a tradition all over America, with the South being no exception. In states such as Alabama, dove shooting, for example, is a great introduction to wing-shooting season every year. And even though the number of dove shooters may have been declining in the last 50 years or so, there are still between 40000 and 50000 dove hunters that flock to those lands and lodges that are famed for their abundance of this game bird. It is said that Alabama is indeed still one of the top destination for dove shoots, and those lodges that offer good opportunities, are still favored above the others and continue to attract inquiries and bookings year after year. An example is the well- known Westervelt Lodge in west Alabama – of course they are only one example; there are others too. When the wing-shooter, whether for dove shoots or one of the other game birds such as quail and pheasant, and to a certain extent chukar, starts looking for the best lodge, certain names always come up. Therefore those lodges are often booked in advance for their popularity as a wing- shooting destination. Of course it is always good to look at leading websites for information about when dove shoot season opens, and what you need in terms of licenses so you have enough time to book your trip to a good lodge. It is also a good idea to compare options and lodges so you are sure which are the ones that are favored for the quality of birds and the trouble management goes to in order for their visiting shooters to get the most out of the experience. You want to know that the lodge you book your trip at, has the staff and managers that are known for being good guides and outfitters so you would like to come back to this lodge in the future, for example. Do they accompany the shooters on their outing, do they offer you the use of good hunting dogs, do they clean the birds you have shot and pack them for you, for example? Dove are normally found in trees and on the ground where they have access to water and those seeds and berries, and insects, that they feed on. Good lodges plant fields so these birds stay, among which millet, corn and other grains are popular. Therefore, those lodges that offer the habitat where these plump birds are most likely to be found, are the ones that will attract the inquiries and bookings. In Alabama, the mourning dove is the prevalent dove species, and wing-shooters that come to the state (or live in the state) for dove hunts, know that this is the one they are likely to come across. Dove shooting is one of the popular wing-shooting disciplines in the South, in a state such as Alabama. Of course there are other popular options too, whether you are after quail or pheasant, for example. As with dove shooting, the same principles apply: you want to book yourself a trip to a lodge that offers good choices, birds that live on lands that offer them the ideal habitat where they have shelter in trees or well-hidden nests on the ground – where good dog work helps to ensure these birds are flushed out. The South is known for great mourning dove shoots, but also for other bird species – and for the purposes of the whitetail deer hunter.
