IPFIX Charter Discussion Juergen Quittek 65th IETF meeting, IPFIX session
Why continue the work on IPFIX? • IPFIX has completed its current charter • PSAMP will do so very soon • Still, a lot of ongoing activities • Growing number of IPFIX implementations • IPFIX interoperability testing events • Paris 05, Salzburg 06 • Large and very active community • Developing extensions and optimizations • 15 closely related individual Internet drafts • Currently, there is no home for this work 2
IPFIX and PSAMP related I-Ds • draft-bclaise-ipfix-reliability-01.txt • draft-boschi-data-exchange-quest-01.txt • draft-boschi-ipfix-implementation-guidelines-01.txt • draft-boschi-ipfix-reducing-redundancy-01.txt • draft-coene-rserpool-applic-ipfix-02.txt • draft-dressler-ipfix-aggregation-02.txt • draft-dressler-nsis-metering-nslp-03.txt • draft-fessi-nsis-m-nslp-framework-02.txt • draft-kobayashi-ipfix-concentrator-mib-01.txt • draft-kobayashi-ipfix-concentrator-model-01.txt • draft-molina-flow-selection-00.txt (expired) • draft-schmoll-ipfix-testing-00.txt • draft-stephan-isp-templates-01.txt • draft-trammell-ipfix-biflow-00.txt • draft-trammell-ipfix-file-00.txt 3
Status of related I-Ds • Some of the drafts are quiet mature • already discussed at two IETF/PSAMP sessions • there seems to be consensus that this work is useful • there seems to be consensus that the chosen approach is the right one • the documents are quite complete • Some drafts need more work • For some the basic approach still needs to be agreed on • For some even the need is not clear 4
How could a home for this work look like? • Change of WG charter layout • from single long-term big target • to a sequence of short-term smaller targets • Select out of the list of suggested work items • those with agreed relevance and approach • those that are rather mature • Define a short-lived charter focused on completing these work items • less than a year • Still continue discussion of other work items • on mailing list, presentations at sessions • further develop them as individual submissions • When (most of) the charter’s items are completed: • either select new ones that have matured meanwhile • or shut down the WG 5
How to select work items? • Is the problem clear and well understood? • Is the work relevant? • Do we need it? Do we need it now? • Is the approach clear and agreed? • Is the approach well understood? • Does it need modifications of the IPFIX protocol? • We should avoid this. • What is the quality of current individual drafts? • How long will it take us to complete? 6
