  3. Essay Structure • Essay Structure: We will be braking it down. • Please prepare notes

  5. Introduction • An introduction is very important to a paper. • Grab the reader’s attention • Introduce the topic. • Tell us your opinion (thesis) at the end of the intro.

  6. Introduction con. • A intro takes all of the broad information (story, author, definition of morality, etc.) • It then becomes very specific when it comes to your thesis.

  7. Thesis • I have given you some notes on your thesis • Some of you I wrote “because…” because your thesis is too broad. • Some of you I wrote that you should “shorten it”. You have so many good reasons that it stops being specific. • Many of you have “try not to use I.” In academic writing we don’t use personal pronouns (I, you, he, she, my, etc.)

  8. Take this time to write your introduction! • Remember: • Grab the reader’s attention • Introduce your topic • Broad topics go at the beginning • Specific thesis statement goes at the end of the paragraph.

  9. Body Paragraph • Minor claim: The point you are making in the paragraph. What specifically are you talking about in THIS paragraph. • Evidence: The thing outside of yourself that proves your point. This is your textual evidence. • Commentary: Commentary is the response to the evidence not the minor claim.   10. Conclusion • Wrap it all up. • Tell your audience the point again • Go over your points. • Do not bring in new information.
