Greek Mythology • Mythology/religion was born from unexplainable, natural events. • Not man-made; must be a god/goddess. • Greeks assigned human emotions and natural events throughout their mythology. • See family tree • The most famous of Greek mythology were the Olympian Gods/Goddesses. • 15 gods/goddesses total; each assigned a role/symbol of daily life. • According to myth, they lived atop Mt. Olympus.

Greek Mythology • Cronus (son or Uranus & Gaia) marries his sister, Rhea. • Had 6 children: • Demeter • Hestia • Hera • Hades • Poseidon • Zeus • Cronus was fated that he would be overthrown by one of his own children. • Cronus prevents being overthrown by: • Swallowing 5 of his newborn children.

Greek Mythology • Not wanting to lose all her children, Rhea swaddles Zeus with a rock before Cronus swallows him. • Cronus swallows Zeus, but regurgitates him because of the rock. • Zeus is hidden from Cronus until fully grown; returns to battle Cronus to free his siblings. • With use of a potion, Zeus gets Cronus to regurgitate his siblings; Zeus defeats Cronus and all Titans; banishes them all.
