LANCASTER HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMY OF FINANCE VITA PROGRAM DETAILS The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) offers free tax help to ALL taxpayers with an emphasis on low- to moderate-income ($37,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Students at Lancaster High School enrolled in the Academy of Finance and the Advanced Accounting classes have received training to help prepare basic tax returns for local residents. The volunteer site is coordinated between Lancaster High School Academy of Finance, The Lancaster-Depew Federal Credit Union, the Internal Revenue Service and the Academy of Finance Business Advisory Board. As part of their classroom curriculum, sophomore students at Lancaster High School have prepared themselves to ensure taxpayers have all of the proper forms and will assist the volunteer preparers. Juniors have spent the past six weeks receiving instruction on the basics of tax code, culminating with 17 students becoming certified by the IRS as Volunteer tax preparers. Each student will volunteer for a minimum of 12 hours with an estimated ability to assist nearly 250 taxpayers. On February 10, March 3,10,24,31 2007, students will conduct FREE open sessions (no appointment necessary) at Lancaster High School between 9:30am-1:30pm. Additional sessions, by appointment only, are available by calling the Lancaster-Depew Federal Credit at (716) 681-1460. Students and other volunteers are trained to help with special credits, such as Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly. In addition to free tax return preparation assistance the Lancaster sites also offer free electronic filing (e-filing). The Academy of Finance at Lancaster High School and its Business Advisory Board are part of the National Academy Foundation (www.naf.org). Currently there are 56 students enrolled in the Academy of Finance with an anticipated enrollment of 90-120 students by 2008. These students follow a rigorous curriculum that provides real life learning experiences such as the VITA program, a paid summer internship in the financial field college credit courses and an expected student-run school bank while still enrolled in high school. The Business Advisory Board is made up of local, regional and national businesses that provide support to ensure students are able to meet the demands of the working world. Current business partners include Bank of Akron, Merrill Lynch, Arndt Asset Management, Nickel City Insurance, Citibank, M&T Bank, Citizens Bank, HSBC, Durham Staffing, Niagara University, Bryant & Stratton, ECC, The Lancaster-Depew Federal Credit Union, Key Bank, Pignataro Financial Group, Timothy Brown – CPA, Devere Mortgage Corporation, Aldrich and Cox plus others.
