  1. Assistive Technology By: Blake Killen

  2. What Is It? • Any device or software that helps a student with a disability meet the goals of his or her IEP.

  3. What Does The Law Say?

  4. The Rehabilitation Act • Section 501: Prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in federal employment. • Section 504: Prohibits discrimination based on disability in federally funded and federally conducted programs.

  5. Americans With Disabilities Act • Prohibits discrimination and ensures equal opportunity for persons with disabilities in employment, state and local government services, public accommodations, commercial facilities, and transportation. • Requires that reasonable accommodations be provided in meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities.

  6. Assistive Technology Act of 1998 • Established a grant program, administered by The U.S. Department of Education, to provide federal funds to support state programs that address assistive technology needs of individuals with disabilities.

  7. Hearing Impaired Assistive Technology • Hearing Loop Systems: Uses electromagnetic energy to transmit sound. • Can be worn as ear piece or headset.

  8. Seeing Impaired Assistive Technology • Video Magnifier: Handheld device that magnifies the words and colors on a screen.

  9. Learning Disabled Assistive Technology • Talking Calculator: Has a built- in speech synthesizer that reads aloud each number, symbol, or operation key a user processes.

  10. Physically Disabled Assistive Technology • Slow Keys: A special keyboard that will not register a request until a key has been held down for a certain amount of time. • Great for individuals that lack motor control.
