  2. Bones Review Quiz • Quick quiz – Number 1-10 in your book • Write down the correct names for the following bones. • 1. Shoulder blade • 2. Knee cap • 3. Toes • 4. Collar Bone • 5. Tibia • 6. Spine • 7. Breast Bone • 8. Bone in forearm that rotates • 9. Wrist Bones • 10. Foot bones

  3. Different Types of Muscle Muscles of the body Muscle is joined onto the bone by a strong, semi-elastic component called a tendon. Bones are joined to other bones and are held in position by very strong, inelastic fibrous bands called ligaments. When ligaments get damaged, bones can be dislocated. Skeletal Muscle Muscles provide force for movement, pulls bones around a joint, either closer together or further apart, allowing movement to occur

  4. Muscles in the Body Anterior View (front) Posterior View (Back)

  5. Complete activity 1.2B – Muscles on page 33 of student workbook Watch how muscles work video

  6. Muscles and Movements • Muscles cannot push they can only pull • For any movement to take place, muscles have to work in pairs • One muscle pulls by shortening its length (contracting). • While its partner relaxes and lengthens (extending). • This causes movement at the joint

  7. Muscles and Movements • Agonist – The muscle that contracts during the movement. e.g. bicep muscle during a bicep curl • Antagonist – The muscle that relaxes to allow the movement. Hint: Agonist = short word = short muscle (contract) Antagonist = long word = long muscle (relaxed)

  8. How your muscles move • Place your left hand on your right bicep. Move your right arm up and down as if you were doing a bicep curl • Stand up and place your hands on your thigh/quadricep. Bend your leg at your knee • During these movements which is your agonist/antagonist muscles?
