  2. What is Aeronautics? 1940’s • is the science that underlies the study, design and manufacture of airplanes or other aviation vehicles.

  3. Subfields Some subfields include: • Rocket Telemetry • Aeronautical Vehicles • Space Vehicles • Systems Engineering & Multi-disciplinary Design • Astrodynamics • Structures & Materials • Propulsion & Power • Navigation, Guidance, Control, & Dynamics • Multi-Vehicle Systems & Air Traffic Control

  4. Astrodynamics • What is astrodynamics? Well it’s the subfield of aeronautics that studies the motion of natural & artificial bodies in space.

  5. UltraSail “Cubesat” • An UltraSail“Cubesat” solar sail spacecraft was lead to a flight test in low Earth orbit. It’s a Cubesatspacecraft bus adapted to solar sail deployment; spaceflight qualification testing; and the flight test.

  6. Space Vehicles • Space Vehicles are a subfield of aeronautics that consists of the designing and creating vehicles for space. Spacecraft are used for a variety of purposes, including communications, earth observation, meteorology, navigation, planetary exploration and transportation of humans and cargo.

  7. Research includes this geostationary orbit: Anik-E2 • Anik-E2 - January 20, 1994 at 9:10 PM, the Anik E2 satellite's momentum wheel system failed, and its backup system also failed, so the satellite continued to spin slowly, rendering it useless. This time, 3.6 million Canadians were affected as their major TV satellite went out of service. Popular programs such as MuchMusic, TSN and the Weather Channel were knocked off the air for three hours while engineers rerouted the services to Anik E1.
