  1. A Breath of Fresh Air A Respiratory Journey By Brian T. O’Key

  2. Introduction For many of us, breathing is something we routinely take for granted. Asthma is a disease process that reminds us just how important breathing really is. Recent studies have shown an elevation in related deaths due to uncontrolled asthma. Some of these deaths could have been prevented and most of these patients would have breathed easierif they had a therapeutic plan of control.

  3. Task Your goal is to help these patients. You will need to research the asthmatic disease process thoroughly. Once you have determined how the patient is affected by the disease process, you will determine appropriate therapeutic modalities to better your patients lives. Remember, there are different levels of severity in relation to an asthmatic attack, so prepare therapy for each level, as the patient’s condition may worsen and you need to be prepared.

  4. Process • All students will be given 2 hours during class time in the computer lab to research material. • Students will need to provide 4 professional journal resources (these must be legitimate sources) that reinforce their therapeutic control plan. • Students will provide documentation (essay format) to the professor stating all findings in APA style with citations and a maximum of 1000 words. • As part of the essay, students will summarize all medical wording and translate into layman terms so that their patients may understand it more easily. The summary should be no more than 3 paragraphs and titled “Summary of Control Plan”.

  5. Resources The following resources are recommended as a starting point: • www.aarc.org • www.rcjournal.com • www.chestnet.org • http://www.thepcrj.org • www.lungusa.org • Other reputable sources

  6. Evaluation • The essay is expected to be completed in professional writing form (reminder: use APA style for citations). • All electronic sources must have a working URL address (I will be checking these). • Assignments must be turned in by the last Friday of the month, no later than 5:00pm. Each day it is late you will be docked a whole letter grade. • All therapeutic modalities indicated for use in your papers must be backed by your research. Remember you are not professionals yet, but you will be!

  7. Conclusion Please remember that any additional resources you use must be reputable. Uncontrolled asthma has had detrimental effects on our society. Our patients need us and I know that you have the ability to succeed. There is a multitude of useful material out there that we tend to overlook daily, be patient and I’m sure you’ll find what you are looking for!

  8. Words of Wisdom “There is no such thing as a 'self-made' man. We are made up of thousands of others. Everyone who has ever done a kind deed for us, or spoken one word of encouragement to us, has entered into the make-up of our character and of our thoughts, as well as our success.” - George Matthew Adams
