  1. Intro Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits Teachers Edible Fractions • By: Monica, Jenny, Tracy, Jillian

  2. Introduction Our friends from Cupcake Elementary School will be visiting our school this Friday. To make them feel welcome, we wanted to make them a special treat. We want to have cake and cookies for them while they’re here. Our problem is that the recipes we have won’t make enough for all of us to share. You can help us update the recipes using your knowledge about fractions.

  3. Task The activities in this Webquest will help you refresh and strengthen what you know about fractions. You’ll be able to add & subtract fractions and multiply & divide fractions to sharpen your skills. Then you will need to change the amounts on the recipes so that we can make enough food for everyone.

  4. Process Your job is to review fractions by clicking on any (or all) of the fraction activity buttons. Once you have finished some of the activities, you may begin the task. Fraction Action Adding Fractions Practice Adding & Subtracting Fraction Game Multiplying Fractions Review Multiplying Fraction Practice Dividing Fractions Review Dividing Fractions Practice Fraction Games! • Your task is to help our chefs in the cafeteria. They need the recipes changed to serve the number of people that will be here. The chocolate cake recipe serves 36 students. You’ll need to update the amounts of each ingredient so that we will have enough cake for all of the students. Remember that we have 224 students in our school and there will be 100 students visiting from Cupcake Elementary School. • The recipe for Almond Coconut Brownies makes enough brownies to serve 60 people, but we only need enough brownies to serve 30 teachers and adults chaperones. 6. Conclusion Thank you for your help. Now the chefs in our cafeteria will use your new recipes to make treats for us to enjoy with our friends from Cupcake Elementary School. We will have just the right amount of cake and brownies to serve. Take what you have learned and modify the recipes you would like to make for friends and family. Enjoy!

  8. Teacher’s Page This WebQuest is designed for students in grades 3 - 5.  Prior to this lesson, learners need to know their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts and have keyboarding and computer navigation skills.  This lesson offers students who need fraction computation practice to utilize the practice activities. Once they’ve fine-tuned their fraction skills, they are ready to move on to the actual task of adjusting ingredient quantities for a given recipe. The students should print their recipe cards once they’re finished re-calculating the quantities. To implement this lesson, a teacher only needs basic computer and internet navigating skills. This WebQuest can be used in the computer lab or in the classroom with computers that have printing capabilities.  This is an individual project, although it can accommodate small groups as well. If time and resources permit, this lesson could be expanded to include the actual food preparation using the updated recipe card. NETS StandardsCake RecipeAlmond Coconut Brownies
