  2. Early Years • 1894: Born in Pittsburgh PA May 11 • 1911: Saw Ruth St. Denis perform and decided to become a dancer • 1916: Joined Denishawn School • Danced Shawn’s “Xochtil” in 1920 • Met composer Louis Horst • 1923: Left Denishawn with Horst

  3. 1926: Taught at Eastman School of Rochester • 1926: First Recital in NY at 48th Street Theatre which included 18 short pieces with other dancers • 1927: Opening of Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance with Louis Horst

  4. 1929: First ballet titled “Heretic” • 1936: Refused to choreograph or attend the Olympics in Berlin, Germany • 1938: Invited by Mrs. Roosevelt to White House • She choreographed “American Document” • 1939: Merce Cunningham and Erick Hawkins joined her company

  5. During the 1930’s she didn’t use sets and built her costumes • During 1940’s she toured the US and Cuba showing her new works that dealt with mythology • 1948: She married Erick Hawkins • 1954: First tour to Paris where she was booed by audience

  6. 1955: Paul Taylor joined her company • 1959: Collaboration with Balachine for “Episodes” • Hiatus of dance and choreographing and suffered illnesses • 1973: “Lucife” for “Scarlet Letter” • 1991: Died while making “The Eye of the Goddess” for Olympics in Barcelona
