  2. If you want to be a teacher… You need a: • Bachelor’s Degree and a • Teaching Credential

  3. General Education Requirements Classes for the Major of choice Total of 120 Units (for most majors; some require 124 or more) What do you need for a bachelor’s degree?

  4. What is a Credential Program? • Traditionally a 5th year of schooling • Includes student teaching • Teaches the methodology and practical applications of how to be a teacher

  6. Subject Matter General Education Golden Four for Transfer Critical Thinking Speech Math English Major Studies Electives Pedagogy (How to teach!) Credential Program (including student teaching) How do you prepare in these two categories of knowledge?

Credential Program Course Prerequisites • Human Development Course (CAS 101, 312, 315 or 325A & B or PSYC 361 or community college course equivalent) • EDEL 315 (Intro to Teaching) (a grade of “B” or better required) • EDEL 325 (Cultural Pluralism in Elem. Classroom) (a grade of “B” or better required)

  8. Other Credential Program Requirements: • Completion of GE and no more than 6 units remaining in the major • GPA 2.75 • CBEST- California Basic Educational Skills Test • Subject Matter Competency • Experience with children • Completed application

  9. Subject Matter Competency • All teachers need to prove to the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) that they “know their stuff” For future elementary school teachers this is done by passing the CSET test.

California Subject Examination for Teachers: Multiple Subjects (CSET) Offered in three separate subtests which are divided by subject matter Language Arts, Literature & Social Science Math & Science Visual & Performing Arts, Physical Education, & Human Development Each Subset is $70* *Excludes additional fees Subject Matter Competency

Cont. • Each subtest is comprised of multiple choice and constructed response answers (e.g. short essays) • Test questions are drawn from the Content Specifications or CA Framework for each subject area. The Content Specs align with the Student Academic Content Standards published by the California State Board of Education. • Each test session lasts for 5 hours whether one, two or three subtests are taken. • Subtests can be taken together or separately – there is no penalty for taking them either way. • A passing CSET score is valid for 5 years from the first test date when a passing score on a subtest was earned

How does one prepare for the CSET? • Become familiar with the Content Specifications, (these are posted on our website). • Know the California Frameworks. • Choose a major to help prepare you in subject matter knowledge. • Take classes to support your knowledge in the subject matter areas. • Keep notes, exams and papers from all subject matter classes.

  14. What classes? • Subtest 1- Literature, Language Arts and Social Sciences, including California History • General Education classes in Composition, Communication, Critical Thinking, Literature, and Children’s Literature. • General Education in early US History, Political Science, Geography, and early World history • Classes in Language and/or Speech Acquisition- English 206, Speech 407, Linguistics 106 or Reading 340; Grammar- English 303; and California History- AMST 395*, History 408, LBST 310*. *Satisfies upper division GE (AMST majors may not use AMST 395 for GE; LBST majors may not use LBST 310 for GE)

What classes? continued • Subtest 2- Math and Science- will include all life sciences and all physical sciences, including Physics and Chemistry • General Education classes in Math, General Biology, Geological Sciences, and some Physics and/or Chemistry. • Upper division courses in Math Education- Math 303A and 303B • Upper division courses in Science Education: GEOL 410 or BIOL 453

What classes? continued • Subtest 3- Visual and Performing Arts, Human Development and Physical Education: • General Education courses in at least two arts domains- Theatre, Art, Music or Dance. • Upper division course in Arts Education- Art 380; Music 433; Dance 471 or Theatre 402A (Choose a domain that differs from GE courses.) • Course in Human Development and/or Developmental Psychology (e.g. Course required for admission to the credential program.) • KNES 386, Movement and the Child

Popular Major for Elementary Teaching Child & Adolescent Development (CHAD) • 51 units • Focuses on study of the child • Major classes help prepare students in Human Development and Life Science. • 15 unit advisement track classes can focus on other subject matter classes such as Math, Science, Arts Education and Movement.

  18. Popular Major for Elementary Teaching Liberal Studies 51 units Focuses on subject matter Extensive subject matter preparation in Social Sciences, Arts, Math Education, Science, and Literature.

  20. Interested in a Natural Science Minor? • Provides additional preparation in several science areas. • Combines well with any major when. • When GE classes are selected carefully, the minor may require 9-11 additional units only. • See an advisor for more information.

  21. New Programs • Streamlined Teacher Education Program • New program combining the Bachelor’s Degree with the Teaching Credential. • Freshman Future Teachers Program • For Freshman only. This is a one year learning community in which students will gain early field experience and will receive extensive early advisement and opportunities for academic planning.

Things to Remember: • Attend Major Department’s Overview • Take the EWP Exam (after writing class for the major) • File for Grad Check (at 90 units) • Attend Education Department’s Overview (1 year prior to entering the credential program) • Apply to Credential Program (Feb for fall; Sept for spring) • If graduating before beginning the credential program, re-apply for Admission to CSUF (October for fall; August for spring) • Take the CBEST as soon as possible. • Take the CSET approximately 12-15 months prior to when you plan on entering the credential program.
