The Law • Definition • A set of enforced rules under which a society is governed. • Purpose • One of the basic social institutions and one of the most necessary. • Why do we have them? • Establishes the rules that define a person’s rights and obligations. • Establishes penalties for people who violate these rules.

Branches of Laws • Civil Law • Determines a person’s legal rights and obligations in many kinds of activities. • Law that deals with person against person. • Types • Contract and commercial law – binding exchanges or business laws • Tort law - compensation • Property law – ownership in real property • Inheritance law – passing on land, property, etc… • Family Law – marriage, abuse, divorce, etc… • Corporation Law - law establishing separate legal entities.

Branches of Laws • Public Law • Involves the government directly. • Defines a person’s rights and obligations in relation to the government. • Types • Criminal Law • Deals with crimes which are actions considered harmful by society • Types • Felonies, crimes punishable by more than one year. • Misdemeanors, crimes punishable by less than one year.

Branches of Laws • Types of Public Law Cont… • Constitutional Law • Deals with rulings pertaining to principles outlined in the constitution. • Administrative Law • Centers on the operations of government agencies. • Can include rulemaking, adjudication, or the enforcement of a specific regulatory agenda. • Fastest growing and most complicated. • International Law • Deals with relationships among nations both in war and in peace.
