  1. SOUTH CROSS COUNTRY Team Information

  2. League & State Competition Macomb Area Conference (MAC) 35 area teams divided into five divisions: • Red (strongest) • White • Blue • Gold (weakest) South is in the RED division. All-League Honors: top 14 at the league meet Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) All high schools belong. Four Divisions based on school size (D1; D2; D3; D4) South is D1 Two levels of competition: • State Regional – nine regions – top three teams to finals. • State Finals – 27 teams qualify. All-Region Honors: top 15 at Regional All-State Honors: top 30 at State

  3. League & State Competition A few South accomplishments: South has won 19 league titles in our 31 year history. Only two teams have ever won the MAC red: South & Stevenson. South has won 21 state regional titles in our 31 year history. South has qualified to the state finals 30 consecutive years (state record).

  4. League (MAC) Competition • South competes in the seven team RED division. • We race each other three times during the season: • MAC Jamboree I (early season) • MAC Jamboree II (mid season) • League Championship Meet (late season) • The jamboree meets determine the official league champion. The seven • varsity teams all compete in one race. The race results are then broken • down into a series of dual meets. The team with the best overall dual • meet record from the two jamboree meets is the league champ. • All JV runners also compete and the results are scored the same way. • This determines the best JV team in the league. • If the dual meet champion does not win the league championship meet, • a second trophy is awarded but the official league title goes to the dual • meet champ. The top 14 runners at the league championship meet earn • All-League Honors. • The teams in our Red Division include South, North, Stevenson, Dakota, • Eisenhower, Utica and L’Anse Creuse North.

Three girls under 18 minutes. Challenge to win the MAC red. Challenge to win the state regional. Challenge to place in the state top three.

  6. Attendance • You are allowed six absences during the season. • Examples of absences that count toward this total include: • Doctor appointments. • Job conflicts. • Tutoring conflicts. • Weekend or weekday family trips that conflict with meets or practices. • Outside of school activities (athletic teams, music/dance/choir, drivers training, other lessons, • classes, church groups, comm. service, etc.). • In school activities (clubs, music/choir rehearsals, shows, student newspaper, yearbook, etc.) unless • approved by Mr. Zaranek. • Examples of absences that are excused (do not count toward the total of six): • Formal college testing conflicts (ACT’s, SAT’s, PSAT’s). However, participant will do everything • possible to schedule tests outside of the season time frame. • Student government (if an elected representative). • School sponsored field trips. • Make up exams that must be taken after school (note from teacher is required). Try to schedule • make-up work in the morning. • Mandatory National Honor Society meeting. • Out of school illness. • If in school, you must come to practice. • If injured, you must be at practice. • Attend all meets. Do not leave early. • Award for perfect attendance.

Elastic ponytail holders having metal parts are legal. Ponytail holders may be of any color and multiple ponytail holders do not have to be the same color. No watches are allowed. Uniforms You must wear the issued team uniform. If you wear apparel under the uniform, it must be a solid color (we wear navy blue). The under garment (t-shirt, tights, etc.) may only show a small company logo. No writing or designs on the under garment. Sunglasses may not be worn. 8. Meet Scoring Order of finish: PLACES:12345678 9101112 13 14 South: Places 1 – 3 – 6 – 7 – 8 (score = 25) plus 10th/11th place Opponent: Places 2 – 4 – 5 – 9 – 12 (score = 32) plus 13th/14th place The first five runners create the team score so South wins the above race 25 – 32. South’s 6th and 7th runners pushed back our opponents #5 runner. This did not improve our team score but it hurt our opponents score. Scoring the large, multi-team invitational (or state level) meets is a bit simpler. Take the place finishes of the first 5 runners and add them up. Compare this score with all the other teams to determine the place finish. If South runners place 3 – 8 – 10 – 15 – 25, our team score would be 61. Our 6th and 7th runners can hurt the scores from other teams by placing ahead of their 5th runner. IN ALL CROSS COUNTRY MEETS, LOW SCORE WINS.
