The decline of social class • Class has been more important in the UK than other Western Countries. • There were strong class based cultures, visible from clothing, accent and mannerisms. • Not as important as it was in the late 1960’s. By Amey & Sarah
Arguments in support of the decline of class • Economic underpinnings to social differences are being eroded. • Cultures based upon class have dissolved. • Political action is no longer based around class organisations.
Is class really in decline? • When asked ‘is there any other major group you identify with?’ Other than class, most people said no. 23.9% said they identified their own business or professional group, whilst others like age group, gender and ethnicity were much lower coming in at around 4.5%. • When asked if their job was just a means of earning a living, only 34% agreed.
Goldthorpe and Marshall (1992), argue the best available research shows little change in the statistical relationship between class and the behaviours examined. ‘ There is no demonstrable decline in the association between class and other social practices’. (cited in Abercrombie, N, Ward, A, 2000).
Criticisms • Method of data collection. • Time of the survey 1984-5. The period of the major coalminers strike. • Class is an outcome of every day social life but cant be measured.
