  2. Agenda • Attendance sheet • Recruitment • Weekly reports • Professionalism and professional growth & ethics = main topic

  3. Recruitment • Herculean efforts must continue • Frequent prompts by DG, Erin, your coordinator and other INL members • Keep matchbooks in purse—pockets • Weekly reports– be specific • Copy Erin, DG, Norka, & your coordinator • Add your picture to weekly reports!

  4. DEFAULT COMMUNICATION • WHISPER– your normal volume-speaking will likely distract others in the lab • No laughing, joking, in lab– participants may think that you are laughing about them or are off task (which you probably are). • Professional clothing– preference is to dress up for the lab, never come to lab with inappropriate clothing this includes work out attire, clothes with rips or holes, stained or tattered clothing or anything to short or revealing. • SHUT THE DOOR QUIETLY– vibrations and noise moves through lab walls and disrupts attention and changes brain waves!

  5. NIDA-5 Great Progress, but still behind • We are behind in planned enrollment • Need to total and heroic focus on recruitment for remainder of the semester • I said we needed to enroll 12 new participants by end of last semester and got 16! Good work! • Everyone needs to think about recruitment every day to keep this happening! • Everyone is responsible for recruiting and accurately reporting their recruiting efforts in their weekly reports

  6. Professionalism in the Lab • The importance in research and in maintaining the lab’s success

  7. Objectives • What are Professionalism issues • Our expectations of professionalism • Our common standards and vulnerabilities, and avoid we-them dichotomies • Appropriate individual and organizational responses to unprofessional behavior

  8. Pillars of Professionalism • Altruism • • Duty • • Integrity • • Respect for others • • Timeliness • • Task-focused behavior • A professional is someone who does the right thing even when no one is looking.

  9. Commitment to: • 1. Professional growth & competence • 2. Honesty • 3. Participant confidentiality • 4. Maintaining appropriate relationships • 5. Commitment to communication to DG & coordinator about problems, concerns • 7. Improving health • 8. Scientific knowledge

  10. Team Member Expectations • Collaborative • Active member • Displays leadership qualities & initiative • Raises the bar for supervisor and all other members • Questions any drift both to supervisor and in weekly report • Respectful of others, including on time for meetings & ready for participant

  11. Team Member Failure to meet expectations : • Exhibits difficulties May be uncooperative, unresponsive to supervisors • Unprofessional or disruptive. • Gets other members off task. Discusses non-lab related activities when focus should be task related.
